In an ironic and thrilling end, St. John Lessary III's 26-yard field goal in double overtime lifted No. 3 Kahuku over No. 4 Farrington, 22-19, for a historic O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red title last night at Aloha Stadium.

Lessary, who had missed two PATs earlier in the game after nailing the first, powered his kick to lift the Red Raiders to their first OIA title since 2006 and 14th since 1970.

Kahuku (10-1) draws a first-round bye in the state Division I tournament. The Governors (8-3) will host Kealakehe Nov. 21 in an opening-round game.

Lessary had been one of the most reliable kickers all season. Place kicking, in fact, had been a challenge for kickers in the past. But Lessary put it all aside for the game-winner.

"All I could think of was my dad," Lessary said. "He's my mentor. He's my inspiration."

It was a heart-breaker for the Governors, who saw 24-yard and 43-yard field goal attempts by Apelu So'oalo — who made seven field goals before last night — miss wide left in the first two overtimes.

"I was hoping we could block it like last week," said Farrington safety/quarterback James Smith, who had a TD saving tackle after Alapeti Magalei's 11-yard run to the Farrington 1. He also dropped Magalei for a three-yard loss after a delay of game penalty against Kahuku, setting the Red Raiders back to the 9, where an incomplete pass on third down led to Lessary's game-winner.

"We battled for four quarters and overtime," Smith said. "The better team won."

In overtime, each team starts from the defense's 20 with a chance to make a first down along the way. Each team has a series in each OT period.

The Governors won the toss in the first overtime and elected to play defense first. Kahuku fumbled on its first play, giving Farrington its series. The Governors got as close as the Kahuku 5, before eventually missing the 24-yard field goal attempt.

Farrington took the ball first, but tackles for losses by Hau'oli Jamora eventually led to the 43-yard field goal attempt that missed.

The Red Raiders took over and quarterback Allan Kubota rushed for eight yards followed by an 11-yard run by Magalei. Kahuku had first-and-goal at the 1, but after no gain, a delay penalty moved Kahuku back to the 6 and a three-yard loss back to the nine, setting up Lessary's kick.

The Red Raiders tied the game on their first series of the second half with Reupena Moors hauling in his second TD pass of the game, a 30-yarder from Kubota. But Lessary's PAT failed, keeping the game tied at 13.

Kahuku then took the lead with 11:40 left when safety Aulola Tonga returned an interception 89 yards for a TD to give Kahuku a 19-13 lead.

Farrington tied with 2:08 left on Harry Tuimaseve's three-yard run. But the PAT failed.
