Autopsy scheduled on Big Island assault victim

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has scheduled an autopsy on Monday to determine cause and manner in the death of a 47-year-old Big Island man who died Friday at The Queen's Medical Center.

The ME declined to confirm the man's name on Sunday but Big Island police identified him Friday as Daniel Martina of Pahoa. Honolulu police have classified the case as an unattended death, pending autopsy findings, but the case is being investigated as a homicide by Big Island police.

According to Big Island authorities, Martina was assaulted and found unconscious Nov. 1 at 1:22 p.m. in a parking lot near the Pahoa Fire Station. A Honolulu police highlight on the case stated the victim was kicked in the chest and fell to the ground, striking his head on the pavement.

Martina was taken to Hilo Medical Center and was brought to Queen's Nov. 1 at 7:53 p.m. He died Friday at 3:05 p.m.

Big Island police are seeking Robert Grant, 35, of Nanawale for questioning.
