Rainbow Wahine sailors second

The University of Hawai'i women's sailing team finished second yesterday at the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Fall Championships in waters off San Diego.

Stanford won the 10-school regatta with a low-best score of 48 points. The Rainbow Wahine amassed 69 points, with Southern California taking third with 74.

Hawai'i's A division team won two of the first three races over the weekend, but Stanford closed by winning the last three of the 10-race series to win with 25 points. UH placed third with 38 points.

Hawai'i's B division team won two of 10 races to place second with 31 points behind Stanford's 23.

'BOWS IN CONTENTION

University of Hawai'i's Andreas Weber and Sascha Heinemann won their second-round matches in the Honolulu Futures qualifying tournament yesterday at the Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.

Today's matches — starting at 10 a.m. — will determine the final eight singles players who will advance to the main draw of the Honolulu Futures — a USTA Pro Circuit tournament considered the largest tennis event on O'ahu.

Weber, a UH junior and No. 4 seed, defeated former Hawai'i Pacific star Mikael Maatta, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0, yesterday. Heinemann, a UH senior and No. 6 seed, defeated Sydney Jim, of Sugar Land, Texas, 6-1, 6-3.

Weber will play No. 12 seed Devin Britton and Heinemann will meet No. 10 seed Nicholas Edlefsen today.

UH sophomore Dennis Lajola and Punahou alum Ikaika Jobe have qualified for the main draw.

YOO WINS WAIKOLOA

Seventh-seeded Daniel Yoo defeated fourth-seeded Tigran Martirosyan, 7-5, 6-4, yesterday to capture the Waikoloa Futures USTA Pro Circuit Tournament at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel.
