Fort Ruger Park renamed to honor fallen warriors

Advertiser Staff

The city's Fort Ruger Park near Diamond Head has been renamed "Operation Redwing Medal of Honor Park" as of today.

The name change is in honor of Lt. Michael P. Murphy and the soldiers and sailors who died with him in Afghanistan during operation Redwing, said City Councilman Charles Djou.

Operation Redwing took place in 2005 in the Hindu Kush Mountains. Its objective was to capture a senior Taliban commander in Afghanistan.

Nineteen Navy SEALS and members of the Army's Special Operations Aviation Regiment died during the operation, including Murphy.

Djou spearheaded efforts to rename the park in honor of the fallen sailors and soldiers.
