Man arrested, charged after beating victim dies

Big Island authorities yesterday charged a 35-year-old Pahoa man with manslaughter in the death of a man found beaten Nov. 1 in Pahoa.

Robert Grant was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the Hawai'i Community Correctional Center, said case investigator Detective Rio Amon-Wilkins.

The victim, 47-year-old Daniel Martina, was found unconscious at 1:22 p.m. Nov. 1 in a parking lot near the Pahoa Fire Station. Police said he had been kicked in the chest and struck his head on the pavement when he fell to the ground. He died Friday.

Police found Grant Saturday in a Nanawale home. Rory Libarios, 47, was charged with hindering prosecution for allegedly hiding Grant. Libarios was released Sunday on bail.
