KULA
Downhill bicycle tours focus of public meetings

The county Department of Public Works will hold two public meetings this month to discuss the downhill bicycle tour industry.

The meetings will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at Kula Elementary School and Nov. 20 at the Mayor Eddie Tam Memorial Center in Makawao.

County leaders have expressed concern about safety and traffic issues related to escorted and unescorted bike tours originating at Haleakala National Park and below park boundaries. The county has contracted the planning firm Kimura International to conduct a study that will provide recommendations and alternatives to the County Council for possible ordinances regulating commercial bicycle tours on state and county highways.

The two meetings follow similar events held in June and are meant to collect additional public feedback on alternatives being considered in the study.

For more information, call Glenn Kimura at Kimura International in Honolulu at 944-8848 or Joe Krueger at the Department of Public Works at 808-270-7745.
