Fire destroys vacant Big Island home

Advertiser Staff

A fire on the Big Island last night caused about $90,000 worth of damage to an unoccupied, single-family home in the Kea'au area, Hawai'i County fire officials said.

The blaze, at 16-0964 40th Ave., was reported a few minutes before 8 p.m.

A dozen firefighters battled the fire for about an hour before declaring it extinguished.

When they arrived at the scene, firefighters found the home fully engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading to the back bedrooms.

The cause is under investigation.
