Fire damages portable classroom on Kauai

LIHU'E – A fire that broke out at a portable classroom at Wilcox Elementary School Tuesday evening was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

Eight firefighters and rescue specialists from the Lihu'e fire station responded to the 9:25 p.m. alarm and by 9:35 p.m. the fire was fully extinguished.

No one was injured in the fire and no other structures were affected, although a nearby portable was located just six feet away from the burning portable.

Damage to the 400-square-foot wooden structure and its contents are estimated to be between $20,000 and $30,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
