BUSINESS BRIEFS
Hawaiian Air flies more passengers

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Hawaiian Airlines said its passenger count increased by nearly 40,000 in October compared with the same month a year earlier.

The state's largest carrier said it flew a total of 646,756 customers last month, up 6.5 percent from 607,393 in October 2007. Through the first 10 months of the year, Hawaiian Airlines has flown 6.58 million passengers, up nearly 11 percent from the same period last year.

Hawaiian also said its planes were 82.9 percent full last month, compared with 89.9 percent in October 2007. The lower load factor came after the airline increased its passenger capacity following the shutdowns of Aloha Airlines and ATA Airlines this spring.

Load factor through the first 10 months of the year was 83.3 percent, down from 87.7 percent a year earlier.

Hawaiian also said that Peter Ingram, the company's chief financial officer, will make a presentation at the Imperial Capital Global Opportunities Conference Nov. 17-18 in New York.

DISNEY SET TO START KO OLINA PROJECT

Disney plans a traditional Hawaiian blessing and ground-breaking next week to mark the start of construction for its new family resort at the Ko Olina Resort & Marina development.

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Nov. 19.

The Disney resort at Ko Olina, scheduled to open in 2011, will have more than 800 units including hotel rooms and villas for Disney Vacation Club, Disney's timeshare division. Disney Vacation Club has grown to serve more than 350,000 individual members from approximately 100 countries and all 50 states. Upon completion, the resort is expected to create nearly 1,000 jobs in Hawai'i and cost an estimated $800 million.
