CaneFires clinch West baseball title

Cyle Hankerd hit a first-inning grand slam and West Oahu held off Waikiki, 6-3, to clinch the West Division title of Hawaii Winter Baseball last night at Hans L'Orange Park.

CaneFires starter Cody Scarpetta worked five scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out eight and walking one.

Tyler Henson hit a two-run single in the second for West Oahu (17-14), which earned a berth in Sunday's HWB championship game.

Yonder Alonso had three hits for the BeachBoys (17-16).

Earlier, North Shore took advantage of three walks issued in the bottom of the ninth, including one with the bases-loaded that scored the winning run, to beat Honolulu, 5-4.

Kyle Martin hit an RBI single in the ninth, and later scored the clincher when Chris Kissock walked Yamaico Navarro as the Honu improved to 14-18.

Dominic Brown hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Sharks (16-16).


TENNIS

HPU'S BODE PREVAILS

Hendrik Bode, who plays No. 1 singles for Hawai'i Pacific University, defeated Chris Wettengel, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, yesterday in the opening round of the Honolulu Futures at the Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Tennis Complex.

In the day's biggest upset, American Alexander Domijan ousted No. 1 seed Uladzimir Ignatik of Belarus, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6). Ignatik is ranked No. 449 and finished 2007 as the No. 2 player in the ITF World Junior Rankings.

"I had so many opportunities to win the match," Domijan said. "He's really good under pressure and I thought I was going to lose in the end."

Also yesterday, No. 5 seed Andrey Kumantsov of Russia beat University of Hawai'i senior Sascha Heinemann, 6-3, 6-3, and Australia's Matt Reid beat Punahou alum and former two-time Hawai'i high school champion Ikaika Jobe, 6-4, 7-5.

Jobe and Brad Lum-Tucker, seeded No. 2 in doubles, opened with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Henry Somerville and Stefan Pampulov.

Competition in the $15,000 USTA Pro Circuit event continues today, with UH sophomore Dennis Lajola beginning defense of his title in a 5 p.m. match.


GOLF

UH'S KUA SHARES LEAD

University of Hawai'i freshman T.J. Kua shot a second-round 5-under-par 67 yesterday to tie for the lead of the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate Tournament at the resort's Palmer Golf Course.

Kua, a former Kamehameha School standout, moved up 12 places from the first round with a 7-under 137 total. He shares the lead with Johan Carlsson (69) of San Diego State. Ohio State's Vaughn Snyder (71), Baylor's Joakim Mikkelsen (68) and Cal Poly's Jarod Knight (71) are tied for third at 138.

The Aztecs share the team lead with UNLV at 8-under 568. Texas is third in the 19-team field at 6-under 570. Hawai'i is tied for eighth at 5-over 581.

The tournament concludes today at Turtle Bay's Fazio Course starting at 7:30 a.m.

BYUH TRIUMPHS

Garrett Sandberg had 16 points and eight rebounds as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Hawai'i Select, 81-65, last night in an exhibition game in La'ie.

Leon Ballard had 21 points and nine rebounds for Hawai'i Select.
