Soccer: Galaxy's Franklin top rookie in MLS

Associated Press

CARSON, Calif. — Los Angeles Galaxy defender Sean Franklin was selected MLS rookie of the year today.

The 23-year-old from Palmdale, Calif., started 26 games for the Galaxy and played 2,385 minutes, second-highest on the club. The No. 4 pick in the MLS draft, Franklin is the team's first winner of the award.

"A number of great players have won this award in the past," Franklin said, "and I look forward to following in their footsteps in this league."

Despite being a natural right back, Franklin spent most of the season playing center defense and earned the Galaxy's defender of the year award.

"Despite being played out of position for a majority of the season, Sean was still able to demonstrate his skills and strengths as a player," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said.

Franklin is currently training with the U.S. national team in Colorado.

The media, MLS players, coaches and general managers voted on the rookie award.
