THE NIGHT STUFF
New parties, clubs for you to check out

By Kawehi Haug
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Let's catch up.

There are a few new (or rather newish) weekly parties on club rotation, as well as a few newly opened clubs that have hit the scene.

WEEKLY PARTIES

Venus kicked off its new Friday night thing Halloween weekend, which was a themed event titled "Trick or Freak."

The ongoing event, titled "Tempted," isn't officially a themed event, but I think it's pretty safe to assume that less is more at this party — less clothing, inhibition, restraint.

Where? Venus Nightclub

What? "Tempted" party

When? 10 p.m.-4 a.m. Fridays

Who's throwing it? Universoul Clothing

Who can go? Those 21 and older

What's the damage? $10 cover

Any specials? $3 drinks until midnight

The Shack in Waikiki hosts the Saturday-night party "The Surf Shack," with reggae, pop and rock music on the stereo and a fondness for the Warriors in its heart. UH home-game attendees get special treatment: If our boys win, show your ticket at the door and get a free beer. If the boys lose, show your ticket at the door and get in free.

Where? The Shack Waikiki

What? "The Surf Shack" party

When? 9 p.m.-4 a.m. Saturdays

Who's throwing it? Vertical Junkies

Who can go? Those 21 and older

What's the damage? $10, $5 cover for kama'aina and liquor commission cardholders

Any specials? $3 Primo beer, $3.50 SoCo Lime shots

Thirtyninehotel keeps its Wednesday nights bumping with its weekly party that pays homage to "golden era" hip-hop. Holding things down for Mixtape is DJ 45Revolver.

Where? thirtyninehotel

What? Mixtape party

When? 9:30 p.m.-2 a.m. Wednesdays

Who can go? Those 21 and older

What's the damage? It's free

IN THE CLUBS

Bonsai Restaurant and Lounge opened late last month in Restaurant Row. Owner Burt Kawasaki said he's not going for pure club with his new joint; he wants the place to be a go-to dining destination for lunch and dinner, too.

Lunch: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. daily; dinner: 5:30-10 p.m. daily. Happy Hour: 5:30-7 p.m.; Late Night Lounge: 10 p.m.-2 a.m. daily.

Hush Boutique Nightclub Lounge also opened last month in the Hawaiian Monarch Hotel. And though the name suffers a bit from an identity crisis, the club knows exactly what it wants to be: a 19th-century-themed (think Moulin Rouge, sort of) party spot for people ages 30 to 50. Must be 23 and older (Ocean Club lovers, rejoice).
