Auto racing's Munter will give environmental talks

 •  Hawaii surfers get the best of Hale'iwa

Leilani Munter, one of only four women to race in the Indy Pro Series and a veteran NASCAR driver will return to her mother's home state for a free public talk Monday. The talk will be about raising environmental awareness within auto racing and beyond.

Her Race To Save The Planet presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hawai'i State Capitol Auditorium and is free and open to the public.

Munter has been racing stock cars (NASCAR) since 2001 and Indy-type cars since 2007. In 2006 she set the record for highest finish by a female driver at Texas Motor Speedway. She has also performed film stunt work and served as a photo double for Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Munter was born and raised in Minnesota. Her mother (Doris Morinoue) is a nurse from Holualoa on the Kona coast.

Munter will also be making the following appearances before her Capitol speech:

  • Tomorrow, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Firestone Complete Auto Care, 98-141 A Kamehameha Highway, 'Aiea.

  • Tomorrow, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Checker Auto Parts, 4561 A Salt Lake Blvd.

    FRIENDS OF KAILUA HIGH SPONSORING RUNS

    The Friends of Kailua High School is sponsoring a 5K run and a 10K run/walk on Sunday at 7 a.m.

    The 5K route starts at the back of Kailua High School (451 Ulumanu Dr.), and the run/walk will proceed along Enchanted Lake and return to the High School.

    Entry fees are $25 for those who want a T-shirt; for those who do not want a shirt, the cost is $15; or $15 for the T-shirt only. Applications can be obtained in the the latest issue of Hawaii Sports magazine, which can be found at sporting goods stores, shoe stores, health clubs, gyms, fitness facilities and bike shops, etc. Also, copies can be obtained at Kailua High School or by e-mailing edracers@aol.com. Runners can also register at www.active.com.

    Packet pickup and additional registration is tomorrow at Fleet Feet at 17 Aulike St. in Kailua from noon to 3 p.m., and Sunday starting at 6 a.m.

    DISCOUNTS OFFERED FOR MAUI MARATHON

    Participants who register before Nov. 30 can benefit from discounts for the 2009 Maui Marathon.

    The 2009 race will be Sept. 20 and will start at 5:30 a.m.

    For those registering before Nov. 30, the cost for kama'aina and military is $55 for the marathon, $50 for the half-marathon and $20 for the Maui Tacos 5K.

    For out-of-state runners, the cost is $60 (marathon); $55 (half-marathon); and $25 (5K).

    Sunday and Dec. 14 — Aloha Youth Lacrosse Association is hosting a free youth clinic and will hold registration for the 2009 season at Kapi'olani Park off Paki Avenue from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The season runs from February to May and is open to boys and girls from age 7 to 18.
