Maui Fire Department gets satellite equipment

The Maui News

KAHULUI, Maui — Maui Fire Chief Jeff Murray and his fire crews dedicated a new mobile satellite communications system installed in a Mobile Command vehicle Friday, The Maui News reported.

John H. Connors Insurance and Fireman's Fund Insurance Company teamed up on a $14,895 grant to purchase the satellite communications system mounted on one of the department's emergency command vehicles.

It will allow a crew at the scene to send video to commanders. The satellite communications link will eliminate disruptions that can occur with normal radio transmitters.

"The satellite system will allow the department to maintain communications in remote areas and during emergencies when other systems may not be operational," Murray said. "It will also provide wireless Internet access and the ability to feed video from a scene so fire officials can monitor ... from an off-site location."
