BERLIN — American swimmer Randall Bal broke the four-day-old world record for the 50-meter backstroke, finishing in 20.87 seconds Sunday at the short-course swimming World Cup.

Former record holder Peter Marshall, also from the U.S., trailed Bal by 0.03 seconds for second place.

Marshall set the record Wednesday in Stockholm.
