DUI arrests slightly up on Big Island

Last week, 25 motorists were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving on the Big Island, raising this year's DUI arrest total to 1,206 there compared to 1,193 during the same period last year.

Of last week's arrests, eight were involved in traffic crashes and eight were under the age of 21.

While DUI arrests are up 1.1 percent, police said, major accidents are down 18 percent on the Big Island. Last year, there were 1,861 through Nov. 17. This year, there have been 1,528.

So far this year, there have been 24 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 35 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
