Waianae man, 38, dies after fall from moving truck

Advertiser Staff

A 38-year-old man died today from apparent injuries suffered in a fall from the roof of a moving truck in Wai'anae.

Police vehicular homicide supervising case investigator Sgt. Alan Vegas said the man was on the roof of a 1986 Nissan pickup truck heading south on Wai'anae Valley Road and fell as the truck negotiated a bend in roadway.

The man on the roof was trying to secure a garbage bin, Vegas said.

Emergency responders were dispatched to 85-1040 Wai'anae Valley Road at 1:28 p.m. The man was taken by city ambulance to a nearby health facility in critical condition, said Bryan Cheplic of the Emergency Services Division.

Vegas said the victim suffered head injuries and died at Wai'anae Coast Comphrehensive Health Center at 2:10 p.m.

An 18-year-old man, who was driving the truck, and a male passenger, 32, both of Wai'anae, were not injured.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office is awaiting confirmation of the man's identity before releasing his name.

Today's fatality was O'ahu's 42nd of the year as compared to 56 at the same time last year.
