Lanai wildfire has burned over 1,000 acres

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters tomorrow will resume fighting a wildfire fanned by wind gusts which has burned over 1,000 acres on Lana'i but posing no immediate threat to property.

The fire, which started about noon near Palawai Basin, moved to within a mile of the Four Seasons Resort Lana'i at Manele Bay and forced the evacuation of about 600 guests and area residents. By 4:40 p.m., officials said the fire was not threatening the resort and people who had evacuated were allowed to return.

Over 20 firefighters are monitoring the fire overnight. The firefight will resume tomorrow when helicopters return at daybreak to continue water drops.

Winds 25-30 miles per hour with some high gusts are affecting the firefight.
