Fire Department to get satellite communications

The Maui Fire Department has received a $14,895 grant to help purchase a mobile satellite communications unit that will be mounted on a command vehicle. The money was donated by the Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. and John H. Connors Insurance Co.

Fire Chief Jeffrey Murray said the satellite system will allow the department to maintain communications in remote areas and during emergencies when other systems may not be operational.

"It will also provide wireless Internet access and the ability to feed video from a scene so fire officials can monitor an incident from an off-site location," he said.
