Comeback actress has Hawaii ties

By Jeff Chung

Veteran actress Kim Sora is making a comeback on the Korean drama scene.

Kim Sora, also known as Kim Sora Kim and now her married name Sora Jung, was a Hawai'i resident for nearly 10 years and now resides in Irvine, Calif. She can be seen portraying Ms. Song on the Korean drama "Scale of God."

Born on Jan. 29, 1968, Jung has two children with her Korean-American husband Thomas Jung: son Ha Young, 7, and daughter Ha Rin, 5.

The Jungs married on Maui in 2000 and resided in Hawai'i before moving to Irvine a couple of years ago.

Kim was already well known in Korea for her work in several series including "Three Kingdoms" and starred in the film "The Terrorist," playing Mayumi, who bombed the Korean air plane. She made a cameo appearance on the sixth episode of the first season of the TV series "Lost" as an interior decorator. Kim then went on to take a small role in the SBS TV series "Lobbyist" as a mother of two children who married an abusive American husband.

Kim was recently on a morning talk show in Korea and talked about her life in the U.S. and her comeback story. The video clips from her Maui wedding used in the show were filmed by me.

Kim has been away from the acting scene for eight years, keeping busy with her family life. Now she plans to do at least one TV series per year in Korea. Kim's husband and two children remain in Irvine while she works in Korea, so the actress makes frequent trips back and forth to see her children. The SBS morning talk show sent a cameraman to Irvine to follow Kim Sora's day-to-day family life. She spends her days with new friends in the neighborhood, takes her son to tae kwon do martial arts class, finds time to exercise and checks her e-mail for scripts for the TV series "Scale of God."

She also finds time to support her son's acting ambitions and Ha Young has already been in a few commercial spots.

While in Hawai'i, Kim kept busy by starting a family and becoming the executive director of the International School of Beauty and Esthetique. Before taking that job, Kim and husband opened the Spa at Yacht Harbor Towers. Her husband was a real-estate man in the Hawai'i market for many years and a longtime Hawai'i resident. The family has since moved to Irvine to expand their business.
