While the economy may be putting a crimp in our spending style this holiday season, there's one category that promises to do well: cosmetics. Past experience indicates that when the going gets rough, women head for the cosmetics counter. There's something comforting about cosmetics. They help us feel pretty without burdening us with guilt.

This season, it's not about the guilt but about the GILT. Unquestionably, gold is the hottest hue for holiday makeup.

Here are 17 of the prettiest pick-me-ups we found, from $9 to $85, from the chic and subtle to the va-va-voom.

GO FOR THE GLOW

  • A subtle gold is a shade anyone can wear, from Alex Wek to Nicole Kidman, according to John Fussell, Chanel's national makeup artist.

  • When using a gold highlighting powder, place it where light will fall on the face.

  • When dusting shimmering powder on your face, continue it down to the decolletage, especially if you're wearing a low-cut or strapless dress. Try dusting it on your shoulders and arms as well.

  • Choose just a few areas to emphasize with a golden glow and don't double up there. If you're adding gold glitter to your eye shadow, don't do gold mascara.

  • For just $10, you can add pizzazz to any makeup you already have by mixing it with Sephora's sparkle sealant by POP Beauty in a shade called "Golden."

  • Chantecaille tiger compact, a sheer tint for all-over face and body, $85, Neiman Marcus, with a portion of the proceeds going to Save the Tigers.

  • Laura Mercier "Gold Dust" eye shadow, $20, Nordstrom.

  • Sisley "Golden Touch" eye shadow, $42, Neiman Marcus.

  • Calvin Klein, "Gold Lamé" eyeshadow, $16, Sephora.

  • Makeup Forever "Aqua Eyes" eyeliner, which will stay put through tears or an unexpected swim, $16, Sephora.

  • Deborah Lippmann "Nefertiti" nail enamel, $15, Neiman Marcus.

  • Shu Uemura eyelashes with golden accents, $25, Neiman Marcus.

  • Two Sephora lip glosses that give a glimmer of gold to the lips, $10.

  • MAC "Goldmine" eye shadow, $14.50, Nordstrom.

  • Sephora "Gold Glitter" eye-shadow, wow for the lids, $10.

  • MAC "Golden Bronze" loose powder for an all-over glow, $21, Nordstrom.

  • Bobbi Brown Lip Shimmer in "Candlelight," $22, Nordstrom.

  • "Frederic Fekkai "Champagne" hair crystals; the crystalline mist adds brilliant dimension and shine for ooh-la-la locks, $18.50, Neiman Marcus.

  • Giorgio Armani Crystal Armani- Silk Lipstick to glide over any shade and turn it to gold, and oh how we love the case, embellished with Swarovski crystals, $38, Neiman Marcus.

  • OPI for Sephora "Charge It" nail enamel, $9, Sephora.

  • Benefit "Moon Beam," which can be blended with any moisturizer or foundation for a golden glow, $24, Sephora.

Note: Many of these makeup lines, including Bobbi Brown, MAC and Benefit are also carried at Macy's. You'll find nearly a dozen different shades of gold eye shadow at MAC, including its Ala Moana Center location.
