BYUH volleyball gets swept

Sara Rice had 12 kills and Jessica Grnados added 11, leading Cal-State San Bernardino to a 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 sweep of Brigham Young-Hawai'i yesterday at the NCAA Division II West Regional volleyball tournament at San Bernardino, Calif.

The top-seeded Coyotes, the California Collegiate Athletic Association champion, improved to 26-3. The eighth-seeded Seasiders, the Pacific West Conference champions, finished their season at 16-9.

Losaline Faka'osi had nine kills to lead BYUH, which was held to a .129 hitting percentage in the match.


COLLEGE BASKETBALL

BYUH MEN BEAT WINONA AGAIN, 92-80

Lucas Alves scored 27 points to lead three teammates in double figures as host Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Winona State, 92-80, last night at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

Trenton Akana added 17 points, Virgil Buensuceso 15 and Marques Whippy 14 for the Seasiders, who improved to 2-0. BYUH beat Winona State, 76-74, Tuesday night.

David Johnson scored 19 points to lead the Warriors, the defending NCAA Division II national champions, who fell to 1-2.

CHAMINADE WOMEN LOSE TO WHITWORTH

Liz Horiatis scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Whitworth to a 63-44 victory over Chaminade yesterday in a women's game at McCabe Gym.

Natalie Orrell added 15 points for the Pirates (1-0), who led 35-19 at halftime.

Samantha Saito scored 13 points to lead the Silverswords (0-4).


GOLF

MEYER TIED FOR 34TH IN DUNLOP PHOENIX

Hawai'i's Gregory Meyer shot a 1-over 72 yesterday and was tied for 34th place after the first round of the $2.12 million Dunlop Phoenix at Miyazaki, Japan.

Australian Paul Sheehan shot a 4-under 67 at the Phoenix Country Club to take a one-stroke lead over a group of seven golfers, including American Brandt Snedeker.
