Pedestrian critical after McCully collision

Advertiser Staff

A 38-year-old man was critically injured late last night after he was struck by a car while jaywalking across McCully Street between Ala Wai and Kapi'olani boulevards, police said.

The man was struck about 11:25 p.m. by a 2002 Chevrolet multipurpose vehicle that was traveling south on McCully, police investigators said.

The pedestrian was attempting to cross McCully from east to west when he darted out from the curb. The impact sent him flying and he wound up on the sidewalk on the west side of the street, police said.

They said the man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and was listed in serious condition upon arrival, but his condition later worsened to critical.

A 54-year-old man driving the Chevrolet was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, police said.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in on the part of the driver, police said. It was not known if the injured pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident, police said.

The south-bound lanes of McCully were closed for about three hours while police vehicular homicide investigators examined the collision site.
