Solidarity vigil set for tomorrow

 •  Beatifying martyrs of Japan

A community "solidarity vigil" is planned tomorrow night, in advance of the Waiawa Makahiki that will be held Monday at the Waiawa Correctional Facility.

Tomorrow's vigil will be at 5 p.m. at the mall area at the intersection of Hamilton Library, Henke Hall and Kennedy Theatre on the University of Hawai'i-Manoa campus.

There will be a Makahiki 'Awa Ceremony and the lighting of kukui (torches), as well as chanting, sponsored by the Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center and The Center for Indigenous Leadership and Peacemaking.

CHRISTMAS THEME WILL BE SCOTTISH

Christ Church Uniting Disciples and Presbyterians in Kailua will have a Scottish advent and Christmas season, thanks to a pastor's exchange with the Church of Scotland in Stromness Parish, Orkney Islands.

For the month of December, the Rev. Fiona Lillie will come to Hawai'i and the Rev. Buddy Summers will go to Stromness.

The sanctuary of the Kailua church will be feature Scottish decor, music and special events, such as the 10 a.m. Sunday worship and a service of Lessons and Carols at 7 p.m. Christmas Eve. Information: 262-6911.

QUEEN'S PORTRAIT WILL BE PRESENTED

A portrait of Queen Emma will be presented by Paulie Jennings to Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew.

The portrait was completed in the early 1960s by Fredda Burwell Holt, wife of John Dominis Holt, and is part of her series of portraits of Hawai'i's ali'i. The event will feature a chant created for the occasion and singing by the Cathedral choir. A blessing will be followed by a procession to the cathedral's Memorial Building, where the portrait will be hung.

The presentation will follow the 9 a.m. service, which will commemorate the lives of King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, and a 10:30 a.m. reception.

ADVENT SERVICE WILL BE NOV. 30

The Lutheran Church of Honolulu will present its 34th annual Advent Procession service at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30.

Based on the Great "O" Antiphons, which refer to the seven names of the Messiah (O Wisdom, O Adonai, O Root of Jesse, O Key of David, O Rising Dawn, O King of Nations, and O Emmanuel — also a nod to the hymn, "O come, o come Emmanuel") — the free service has been set by choirmaster Carl Crosier for congregation, choir and handbells.

Church members have fabricated banners for each symbol, which will be presented in procession. It will be sung by the Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir and Compline and directed by Crosier, Allen Bauchle and Keane Ishii, with Katherine Crosier at the organ.

CURTIS RIGSBY IS KICKOFF SPEAKER

"Wellspring of Buddhist- Christian Dialogue," a talk by Curtis Rigsby, will top the Interfaith Open Table at 7 a.m. Dec. 3 at First Unitarian Church, 2500 Pali Highway.

Rigsby, who has a Ph.D in comparative philosophy from the University of Hawai'i, has worked with the Nihon Holiness Kyodan in Japan.

Also on the agenda is Fritz Fritschel, a retired Lutheran clergyman, who will discuss process theology and interfaith dialogue.

Several Thanksgiving interfaith services are being held around O'ahu:
