Man guilty of lesser charge in stabbing

Advertiser Staff

A Circuit Court jury in the murder trial of Frank Sanes deliberated a day before convicting Sanes yesterday of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Sanes, of Wahiawa, was accused of stabbing to death Bill Refilong, 21, outside a Waimalu bar Dec. 1, 2005.

Sanes pleaded self-defense, arguing that he believed Refilong had a weapon in his hand.

A previous trial of Sanes in 2007 on the murder charge ended in a hung jury.

Circuit Judge Richard Perkins presided over both trials.

He will sentence Sanes on Feb. 25.

Deputy Prosecutor Kevin Takata represented the state.

Defense attorney Nelson Goo represented Sanes.
