STORRS, Conn. — As if Tina Charles, Renee Montgomery and Maya Moore weren't enough, top-ranked Connecticut has some other options this season.

For the third consecutive game, at least five players scored in double figures to help the Huskies romp past Rhode Island, 91-43, yesterday.

Charles led the way with 21 points and nine rebounds in just 20 minutes. Freshman Tiffany Hayes hit 7 of 9 shots and finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Montgomery and freshman Caroline Doty each had 14 points, while Moore added 13 for UConn (3-0).

"All the girls make you feel so comfortable," said Doty, who was 3-for-4 from behind the arc. "They'll attract the defense and then you'll be open, or if you want to attract the defense, then they'll be open. I just think we work really well as a team to know that every single one of us can contribute."

Megan Shoniker led Rhode Island (1-2) with 11 points.

UConn shot 60 percent from the field while holding Rhode Island to 31 percent. The Rams had 26 turnovers and 18 fouls.

"They're obviously a well-rounded team and pretty balanced," Rhode Island coach Tom Garrick said. "They have all the components of whatever it is to win basketball games — inside game, outside game, defensive pressure, rebounding."

Rhode Island led 4-2 before UConn went on a 17-0 run over the next five minutes. Charles scored the first five points for the Huskies and was 7 of 9 from the field.
