NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Brett Favre gave the Tennessee Titans a painful reminder yesterday. He will pick apart the best NFL defenses when given too much time.

Favre threw for 224 yards and two touchdown passes, Leon Washington ran for two scores and the New York Jets served notice they will be a factor in the AFC this season by routing the Titans, 34-13, ending the perfect start by the NFL's last undefeated team.

"I'm not going to sit here and say we've established ourselves as the best team in football," Favre said. "All it says is I think we beat the best team in football today, definitely if you go by record and the way that they've played. They have been the best team in football."

The Jets (8-3) came in atop the AFC East after a victory over New England at Foxborough. They have won five straight for the first time since October 2004 and seven of their past eight. The win also pulled them within two of Tennessee (10-1) with five to play in the race for home-field advantage through the playoffs.

Jets linebacker Bryan Thomas called it a statement to the rest of the NFL.

"Now people are going to start looking at us and say, 'They are a team you have to reckon with,' " Thomas said.

New York coach Eric Mangini said he was proud of his team for playing, and winning, in a challenging environment. The Titans sold out their 101st consecutive game.

"We've been down here the last three years. It's loud, and it's always been a tough place to play," Mangini said.

The Titans had won 13 straight regular-season games dating to Dec. 16, 2007, in becoming only the 11th team since 1970 to win its first 10 games.

"It was a great run, and we've got to win our next game," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said of playing Detroit on Thursday.

This time, the NFL's stingiest scoring defense that had been allowing 13.1 points per game had no answer for Favre and the Jets, even with the return of defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch.

The Jets spread out Tennessee, Favre threw fast and often, and they wore the Titans' defense down by keeping it on the field for more than 40 minutes. New York overcame two turnovers and two sacks in the first half by outgaining Tennessee on offense 409-281.

"We really didn't have an answer for it today," Vanden Bosch said. "Favre had a really good game. Give him credit. We knew what to expect from him. He's a great player, and he beat us today."

LELIE HAS BIG GAME AS RAIDERS TOP BRONCOS

DENVER — Wide receiver Ashley Lelie and the Oakland Raiders both got even with the Denver Broncos.

The Radford High and University of Hawai'i alum, who forced a trade out of Denver in 2006 after a bitter holdout, returned to Invesco Field yesterday and helped lead the Raiders to a stunning 31-10 win over the Broncos with his best game in years.

"I've been dreaming for this moment ever since I left here," Lelie said after catching a touchdown pass and setting up another TD with a spectacular 51-yard catch. "It feels good that it was with the Raiders."

Lelie, who caught a cosmetic touchdown in Oakland's season-opening 41-14 loss to Denver, languished in Atlanta, San Francisco and Oakland before he returned to rock the Broncos with four catches for 92 yards, nearly doubling his season totals.

"Ever since I left, this is what I wanted to do — to come back to Invesco and show I've still got it," Lelie said. "Come back and kind of put it to the people who didn't think I was good enough."

At the top of that list was Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, who refused to give in to Lelie's contract demands and sent him to the Falcons after a protracted holdout that sparked an ugly grievance over fines.

"When Ashley was here, he did the same thing, made those big plays," Shanahan said. "When the ball's thrown up in the air, Ashley's always come down with those plays. Didn't surprise me at all. Ashley's got excellent hands. For some reason it didn't work out at other places when he left here. But when he was here, he was pretty productive."

Lelie caught 54 passes for 1,084 yards and seven touchdowns during his best NFL season with Denver in 2004, but he hasn't come close to replicating those numbers since.

"Just not getting the opportunities," Lelie said. "When I did get an opportunity in San Fran, well, I didn't really get one. Here, they finally gave me the opportunity with Javon (Walker) getting a little nicked up and they put me on the field to give me a chance to do what I can do."

Rookie Darren McFadden ran for two 1-yard touchdowns as the Raiders (3-8) snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Broncos dipped to 6-5.

PATRIOTS 48, DOLPHINS 28

MIAMI — Matt Cassel threw for 415 yards and Randy Moss caught three touchdown passes as the Patriots (7-4) beat the Dolphins (6-5). Cassel completed 30 of 43, including touchdowns of 25, 8 and 29 yards to Moss.

COLTS 23, CHARGERS 20

San Diego — Adam Vinatieri made a 51-yard field goal as time expired to lift visiting Indianapolis (7-4) over San Diego (4-7). Peyton Manning threw two touchdown passes for the Colts, who won their fourth straight game to remain in wild-card contention.

BILLS 54, CHIEFS 31

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Trent Edwards threw for two touchdowns, ran for two others and the Bills (6-5) scored more points than had ever been scored against the Chiefs (1-10). The previous high against the Chiefs was 51 in an overtime loss at Seattle in 1983.

TEXANS 16, BROWNS 6

CLEVELAND — Sage Rosenfels passed for 275 yards and a touchdown, and Kris Brown kicked three field goals as the Texans (4-7) snapped an eight-game losing streak outside Texas with a win over the Browns (4-7).
