Makiki man suspect in $30,000 camera shop burglary

Advertiser Staff

A 38-year-old Makiki man was arrested early today on suspicion of stealing over $30,000 in new and old photography items from a camera shop, police said.

Clay R. Lewis Jr., 38, was arrested at 1:10 a.m. at 1544 Ke'eaumoku St. after fleeing from police. He is being held on an outstanding $600 warrant while being investigated for second-degree burglary and first-degree theft.

An off-duty police officer driving home reported seeing a man wearing a hoody and carrying a large bag in the parking lot of a camera store that was closed at 12:42 a.m. The off-duty officer provided information to responding officers, who attempted a traffic stop on the suspect. The suspect, however, drove off but not out of the sight of officers.

The suspect vehicle was located at a apartment parking lot but as officers approached, the man fled from the van. Police located the suspect hiding between buildings. Stolen items were seized from the suspect's van, police said.
