Leashed dogs allowed on Kauai bike path

Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i dog owners will be allowed to walk their leashed pets on a designated portion of a bike path from Lihi Park to just south of the picnic shelter closest to Kealia Bridge starting Monday.

Kylan Dela Cruz, deputy director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, said the county will review the change after an 18-month trial period.

"This will be a new endeavor for everyone," said Dela Cruz. "Hopefully, the rules will be followed and the shared use path can be enjoyed by all users."

Dog handlers on the path must adhere to the following rules:

  • Be in command and control of no more than two dogs at all times.

  • Have dogs on a leash no more than six feet long; retractable leashes are not allowed.

  • Immediately remove their dog if it exhibits aggressive behavior.

  • Visibly carry the necessary instruments required for the removal and disposal of dog feces.

  • Pick up and dispose of any feces left by dogs.

  • Dogs must wear valid dog license tag that is clearly and visibly attached to the dog's collar.

Anyone who violates the rules regarding dogs on the shared use path will be cited.

  • First offense: Fine of not less than $100 and a court hearing.

  • Second offense: Fine of not less than $200 and a court hearing.

  • Third offense. Fine of not less than $300 and not more than $500 and a court hearing.
