  • President Emanuel Mori of the Federated States of Micronesia recently sponsored a ceremony honoring outstanding FSM business and community leaders in Hawai'i. Honored were: Chuuk State: Margarita Cholymay, Sepkap Esah and Elvis Shirai. Pohnpei State: Radigan David, Mitchell Neth and Nelsin Wilson. Yap State: Lubuw Talanruw, Jessy Defan, Ronald Yow and Max Yarawamai. Kosrae State: Yoslyn Sigrah, Lilian Siegal and Elwell Tauleng.

  • Through a nationwide program of volunteers, the North American Tawanese Women's Association is doing its part to support the troops deployed overseas.

    The group's local chapter has been sending "care packages" to 25th Infantry Division soldiers in Iraq. Most recently, the women sent nine care packages to soldiers of the division's Stryker Brigade Combat Team through the www.AnySoldier.com program.

    Money to obtain and send the packages was donated by the Taiwanese American community in Hawai'i.

  • G. Jeffrey Taylor, planetary scientist at the Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, University of Hawai'i at Manoa, has been named the 2008 recipient of the Carl Sagan Medal for Excellence in Public Communication in Planetary Science.

    Taylor's gift is science writing. Among his works are a novel, "Impact!" and award-winning children's books, "A Close Look at the Moon" and "Volcanoes in Our Solar System." His writings appear in Scientific American and other scientific publications, his opinions are sought by print and online science writers and he appears frequently on radio and in television news and science documentaries.

  • The commander of the 14th Coast Guard District, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Manson Brownhere, recently was recognized by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Hawai'i chapter as senior government leader for September.

    AFCEA is an international organization of academic, civilian, government and military professionals who work in the information technology, communications and engineering fields.

    The 14th Coast Guard District encompasses a 12.2 million-square- mile area of responsibility. Although it is the largest area of responsibility in the Coast Guard, it has the smallest work force.

  • The Hawai'i State Public Library System has honored the following employees: Eugene Ishihara, automated systems equipment technician from the Big Island, is the 2008 Employee of the Year. A 29-year veteran, he is responsible for repairing and maintaining Big Island library system public and staff computers, printers, telephones and facsimile machines. He also teaches staff the proper use of computers, electronic equipment, hardware and software.

    The Thelma Parker Memorial Public & School Library staff is the recipient of the 2008 Team of the Year Award. Staff includes: Pamela Akao, branch manager, Jo Ann Koga, library assistant IV, Juanette Cordeiro, library assistant III, and Samuel Toler, janitor.

    Keith Fujio, administrative services officer, Office of the State Librarian, is the 2008 Manager of the Year. He assists the state librarian in the preparation, coordination and explanation of the library system operating budget, capital improvements, equipment and supply procurement, human resources and statewide transport of library materials throughout the library system.

    Staff members who earned the 2008 Sustained Superior Performance Award are Floyd Fuerte, janitor, Lahaina Public Library; Noreen Nishikawa, library technician, Kapolei Public Library; and Hilma Inenaga, secretary, Hawai'i State Library.

  • Chris Salvador, 16, of 'Aiea, is the winner of Aloha Tower Marketplace's third annual 'Ukulele Contest. Salvador will be a representative of the 2009 Aloha Festivals. He was awarded a Kamaka concert 'ukulele and a concert 'ukulele case from the Hawaiian Ukulele Company.

    Participants were judged on instrumental ability, stage presence, rhythm/ timing and overall performance.

    Second place went to Kirk Shimabukuro of Hilo, who won a KoAloha concert 'ukulele; and third place went to David Ardo of Manoa, who won a Leolani Mahogany concert 'ukulele. Both also received a concert 'ukulele case from the Hawaiian Ukulele Company.

  • Marisa Takahashi, former staff member with Hawaii Medical Service Association and KITV4, has been hired as public relations/membership director of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i. She most recently was a community and public relations program specialist at HMSA and a news reporter and producer at KITV4/ABC News.

  • At the city's Discover Recycling Fair held in September, Lex Brodie's recognized Kaimuki Middle School as the current top-performing school in the city's Community Recycling Bin Program. The school, which collected more than 1 million pounds of recyclable material during 2007, received a $1,000 award.
