WHAT WE'RE THANKFUL FOR

Advertiser readers share their Thanksgiving thoughts and hopes.

A DAY TO BE GRATEFUL FOR ALL THAT WE HAVE

In the midst of many challenges America and the world face, Thanksgiving is a great day to reflect on the good in our lives.

It's not just a day to sit on the couch and watch NFL teams battling it out to get into the playoffs.

It's also not a day to stress on work and school.

But it is a day to be grateful for what we have.

This Thanksgiving Day, I will give thanks to my dad, who works his whole heart out to provide the best for his family.

I will give thanks to my mom, who cares for her children when Dad is not home.

I will give thanks to all my family members, friends, teachers and classmates for their love and support as well.

Last, but not least, I will give the deepest gratitude I can give to our troops for valiantly defending freedom at home and abroad.

Let's all be thankful for the real things that are important in life. May you have a great Thanksgiving Day!

WE TRULY HAVE MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR

I give thanks for:

The American people, who have turned the page on racism. For the gift of living in paradise (but not for the many litterbugs and graffiti vandals, who spoil it).

For Kaiser Medical Center and all of their great service (and where I met my dearest friends ever).

For the Superferry and for rail, which will help to eliminate the gridlock (worst in the nation) we now endure.

And, as one who lived through the 1930s, for the coming "New New Deal," which can save our country in these very hard times for so many people.

For Hawai'i Public Radio and for the gift of music.

For our luck in having two daily newspapers, the symphony and opera, and the great University of Hawai'i (now 100 years old).

For the Hawaiian people and their culture, in which we find such beauty and learn so much, and for saving their dance and language.

Nancy Bey Little
Makiki

GRATEFUL FOR FAMILY, FREEDOM, LIVING HERE

This Thanksgiving, it is important to appreciate what we have. I am grateful for my family, my freedom and the fact that I live in beautiful Hawai'i.

While giving thanks, we are reminded of the many challenges we will face in the coming years — economic instability, the energy crisis and two wars. But when has life ever been free of challenges?

Struggle is what makes us great. So, above all, I am thankful to live alongside a people that I know will never give up, no matter how great the challenges.

APPRECIATING HEALTH, FAMILY, AMERICA

I'm very very thankful to God especially for my health — I am now cancer free. I had breast cancer. I am thankful for my six lovely children and grandchildren, and to be with all of them on Thanksgiving Day, which will be spent in Seattle.

Also I'm thankful for my grandson, Justin Honda, who is in the Marines and did three tours in Iraq. He is safe and home now in California.

God bless America and bless our service people who are still there in Iraq and Afghanistan, who made it possible for us to have our freedom.

Louise P. Honda

THANKS TO A LOVING AND GRACIOUS FAMILY

I'm fortunate to have a hard-working family who give me encouragement and motivation to be a role model.

Of course, my siblings and I argue over whose turn it is to clean up the kitchen, but that teaches me responsibility, honesty and consideration for others (not mention how much it has helped my debate skills.)

My parents drive me to basketball and hula practice, allowing me to pursue my passions.

Alyssa, my third-grade sister, is an extraordinary artist and performer (she tends to be the family's "drama queen.")

Zachary, my 8th-grade brother, is extremely intelligent (I wish I was as good as him in math) and giving.

I used to think it was not "cool" to hug my parents (teenagers ...), but I have grown to realize how hard they work and how much time they put in to help me.

I am so thankful to have food on my plate at every meal, go to an excellent school, have amazing opportunities for success and have a gracious, loving family, who I love more than anything else.

GIVING THANKS FOR A RESILIENT AMERICA

As a teenager who immigrated to America, Thanksgiving Day brings memories of the rivalries of the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. The smell of turkey and ham. The overcrowded dinner table and laughter with relatives not seen enough.

It is a day to thank God for the fortune with which I have been blessed — good health, close family, friends and a comfortable living. I am also privileged in raising my young son.

Most of all, I am thankful for our great nation. Its people are the most generous and resilient. A country that endured world wars, the Great Depression and 9/11 will again galvanize to overcome our varied calamities of today.

GIVING THANKS FOR THE MANY BLESSINGS OF LIFE

We can be thankful for so much, particularly for the knowledge and comfort that our nation continues to be a bastion of freedom and democracy in the world. Yes, our financial industry is struggling. Businesses and consumers are retrenching. American troops are in harm's way in Iraq and Afghanistan. And we have our individual worries and concerns.

But we can also be deeply grateful for the love and affection of our families, the companionship and support of good friends and the blessings of life in a beautiful island state.

We can also be thankful that we have, above all, hope: Hope that each new day will bring us opportunities for a better life in this great land. It was in this spirit that the Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving, and it is in this spirit that we celebrate this holiday today.

Gail and I wish you and yours a happy and blessed Thanksgiving. Aloha.

SHARING PART OF OUR HOLIDAY TRADITION

As the holiday season approaches, we would like to wish the people of Hawai'i a happy Thanksgiving. We are grateful that our state's rich mix of cultures and traditions cultivates a unique harmony, reflecting the countless blessings we enjoy.

During these challenging economic times, we are reminded that a valued part of our holiday tradition is Hawai'i residents' willingness to share their time and treasures with those less fortunate members of our community. Many will serve meals to the hungry or donate food to a needy family. Each one of us can make a difference by being involved in our community. By sharing our aloha with those who need it most, together we can strengthen our economy, helping to ensure growth in the years ahead.

In Hawai'i, the stunning beauty of our islands, a diverse culture that welcomes new friends and old, and the ideals of 'ohana, which tie us to this special place we call home, are among the blessings for which we can be thankful. Let us also take a moment to remember our troops in the Middle East who are sacrificing time with their families to protect the principles of freedom and democracy. We appreciate the efforts made by the members of our armed forces and their 'ohana.

Our administration is thankful for the people of Hawai'i who make our state an exceptional place to live, work and raise a family. We are proud to be a part of a country where we are empowered to help those around us in need.

TIME TO REMEMBER WHAT FAMILIES MEAN

As my family joins together for Thanksgiving this year it will be without my beautiful mother, Jean Van Ness, who went home to heaven just 24 days ago.

I am so thankful for her incredible love and devotion to our family.

I am thankful to have a father, Dick, who for 56 years modeled what a husband should be. I am thankful for a husband, Gene, who shows me love and humor daily. Mostly I am thankful for a God who sustains and loves us.

Happy Thanksgiving Hawai'i!

MANY MEMORIES OF PAST, PRESENT STUDENTS

Mahalo nui loa me ke aloha to all of the students I have been so blessed to teach here at Niu Valley Middle School. I am thankful for each and every one of you (more than 1,000). You have touched my heart in so many ways, and I love you very much. So many wonderful memories I keep of you.

Those of you who've moved on to college, careers and families: I hope that this Day of Thanks finds you and yours healthy and happy. Those of you at Kaiser/Kalani high schools or private schools: Honor what I have taught you and believe in yourselves; as you well know, I believe in you.

To my present students: Thank you for keeping me young at heart and let us continue to learn together and take care of each other and our Islands.

Each one of you owns a chunk of my heart. You make teaching easy because you learn with your hearts and your heads. Thank you for making Niu Valley Middle School special. I can honestly say that I look forward to teaching each and every day because of you.

I would be remiss if I neglected to thank your families as well; so many generous, supportive and loving people are in our lives. I am grateful for your parents and their involvement and leadership in your lives. Thank you to all the families of all my students now and over the years.

Remember always to "malama your mamas" and that now, and forever, "I love you better than the toaster."

Erin Noordhoff
Language Arts 8, Niu Valley Middle School

THANKFUL FOR PARENTS, THEIR SUPPORT, TRUST

I haven't taken the time to consider what I am thankful for lately. I have gotten used to living comfortably, with my parents supporting me completely in all aspects of my life.

But as Thanksgiving comes around, and things get harder for everyone, I realize that my parents truly deserve praise for all that they have done.

Not only do they support the family financially, but they trust and support my decisions, actually listen to what I have to say, and give me free time to do things that I want to do.

They aren't incredibly unfair, and raised me to be a good citizen.

Furthermore, my parents give me something that not everyone gets to have: independence.

My parents have done so much for me, and for that, I am thankful.

THANKFUL FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, LIVING HERE

There's so much to be thankful for this year again.

We live in the most beautiful place on Earth. Sure, we have problems but at least it's not raining and snowing and I get to wear shorts in November!

I'm thankful for my job. I just made 25 years with the company I work for and am grateful that I still have my job and that I work for and with people I like. I look forward to waking up and going to work.

I'm so thankful for friends. We'll be spending Thanksgiving dinner with friends who we don't get to hang with very often but they are in my heart all year.

I'm thankful for the women of Dangerous Curve Hawai'i. We participate in charity events, especially the Kaukau Kitchen event after Thanksgiving in Chinatown and Toys for Tots in December and the March of Dimes ride this month.

It's gratifying and humbling that we can do these things. So many people have less than we do.

I'm grateful for my husband and our four-legged "kids." He's retired this year after working hard for so long to make a secure life for us.

We're far from wealthy monetarily, but we've never been homeless or flat broke either. We've gone from welfare and renting to full-time employment and home ownership and ever and always our faith in a higher power has sustained us.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

A DAY TO CONTEMPLATE MANY GIFTS WE HAVE

Thanksgiving 2008 blends together all that I hold precious and important. It's a time of quiet contemplation on all the gifts that come my way in spite of our economic problems and wars.

With the economy getting worse, I am thankful that I am surrounded and supported by lots of love —a good wife who cares and understands me, my family, friends and 'ohana at church. I am thankful for my health, a comfortable home, food to eat and to be able to live in the best state, Hawai'i.

I am thankful that on Thanksgiving Day I have the opportunity to be a volunteer at The Salvation Army Annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall, to share in helping with dinner for people that would not have a Thanksgiving meal and would otherwise be alone.

I'm thankful and proud of the UH football team that is so dedicated and hard-working, playing for a new head coach, and giving their supreme effort and energy as they play for the fans and school that really appreciate them.

I give thanks for being born and raised in Hawai'i, living in a country where a person's background doesn't prevent him from being elected as our 44th president. Being able to be a part of that history-making election and witness a man who was born in Hawai'i being able to overcome racial and political differences. I am thankful for being an American.

I give thanks for our military, who faithfully serve the cause of freedom and justice around the world. They unselfishly display bravery and duty, who sacrifice their comfort and security in serving our country.

Most of all, I appreciate and am grateful for the blessings that I enjoy from God my Father. For that I am most thankful.

THANKS TO THOSE WHO HAVE TOUCHED HER SOUL

I give thanks to the dawn of each morning, that I am alive.

I give thanks to the Earth, that I live in a place of such beauty. I give thanks to the bird's song and the cat's meow, that I am able to hear. And I give thanks to all the people in my life who have touched my soul with their love.

UNCLE JOE TAUGHT HER CHARACTER, RESILIENCE

The Pellerins have been my parents' neighbors in Mililani for more than 40 years.

As a part-African-American boy growing up in blatantly racist Louisiana, Joseph Pellerin suffered every cruelty and disrespect imaginable. He'd recall in vivid detail all the horrific experiences one only reads about in history books, or sees on TV documentaries.

Yet, his spirit was never crushed. Through it all, he was never embittered, nor did he ever develop a victimized attitude.

After arriving in Hawai'i in 1944, he married a wonderful woman, never looked back, and proceeded to lead an honorable and productive life. I am thankful for knowing Uncle Joe, who by example can teach us all about strength of character and resilience.

ARE WE READY TO SUSTAIN OUR 'OHANA?

In Hawai'i, we are constantly reminded of how tightly we are bound together.

Someone not too far removed from each of us is experiencing a crisis right now caused by hunger, a health emergency, homelessness or hopelessness.

Two wars and a global financial crisis can seem like distant unrealities, but our island conscience knows that these are having real effects on real people. We live too close to each other to deny it.

This holiday season, a perfect storm is brewing. More people are being driven into hard times because of a sinking economy; just at a time when our government might cut social services because of falling revenues; just at a time when charitable organizations are financially crippled; just at a time when we might neglect long-term investments, like education, that could prevent future despair.

We can prepare for this storm. Are we as individuals ready to sustain our own 'ohana and help our neighbors? Can businesses evolve under economic stress while fulfilling their social responsibilities? Will government formulate wise and clear plans for the short and long term?

In tough times, I am thankful for my fellow islanders, and our tradition of finding our better selves in times of struggle.

RE-AFFIRM BONDS WITH FAMILY, COMMUNITY

Times are really tough for many Americans as we celebrate Thanksgiving this year.

High unemployment, a depressed housing market, declines in the stock market, increased debt and the demands of two wars have placed unbelievable strains on all Americans. Not since 9/11 have we been so harshly tested, but I have complete faith that we will survive these times.

We must thank our Creator for all of wonderful blessings that are present in our society.

While my candidate did not win, the election of Barack Obama sends a powerful signal to our society and the rest of the world that regardless of an individual's ethnicity, family circumstances and society's pressure, success is possible. It also clearly demonstrates that America realizes its faults and has the capability to overcome the mistakes of the past.

This is truly a wonderful message that all of us must acknowledge as one of the greatest achievements in our history.

Americans have the unique capability to find inner strength when the forces of darkness prevail.

While current events seem bleak, let us re-affirm our bonds with our family, community and country, and seek forgiveness for those who have caused us hardship.

THANKFUL FOR ALA WAI COMMUNITY PARK

I am thankful for the Ala Wai Community Park at the intersection of McCully and Kapi'olani Boulevard. Even though there is lots of mud, litter and strays, the Ala Wai has become a second home.

I arrived there two years ago — a freshman Pac-5 paddler. I was at the Ala Wai six days a week for four months. I practiced hard and made good friends. After season, I started summer paddling at the Ala Wai. My mother soon joined Kamehameha Canoe Club, and my sister followed. We made more friends and now frequently go potluck by the water.

Little things about the Ala Wai make it special: fun moon jellyfish that don't sting, echoes as you pass underneath bridges, favoringly warm or cool water from rubber hoses, and small wooden shelters bearing years of signatures. I love and am thankful for it all.

The Ala Wai has done a lot for me. It helped me meet Hawai'i, make great friends, stay fit, learn a fantastic sport, take care of the environment and keep in touch with my family. I am thankful for the Ala Wai and will always try to care for it.

GRATEFUL FOR AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENT

Above everything else this holiday season, I am thankful that I have a family to spend this time with.

Our nation is on the verge of change and transformation, but there is one thing in my life that is unwavering; my family. They stand beside me in all that I do, always encouraging, always helping, and always supporting.

It is for them that I would like to express my gratitude this holiday season.

I am also thankful for the many changes being made in our nation and our world toward environmentally friendly alternatives.

One of my main interests is the preservation of our planet, and all of its resources. I am grateful that many people are starting to make conscious efforts toward conserving, recycling and reducing their carbon footprints.

I am so thankful to see that people are taking interest in the well being of our planet, and realizing the important role that we all play in the preservation of our world today.

EDUCATION HELPS SHAPE OUR LIVES FOR THE GOOD

In spite of the daily challenges we face, there is much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season. Among numerous blessings, I am thankful for the gift of education.

We are fortunate and privileged to live in a country where free education is available to all, and we should never take this privilege for granted.

My good education has shaped my life. Because of my challenging classes, supportive and passionate teachers and loving parents, I have developed wholesome habits, self-confidence, and an awareness of my responsibilities as a contributing member of my generation. As I have become more knowledgeable about the world around me, I have become more passionate in serving others and active in my community. I volunteer at Kuakini Hospital every weekend and participate in clubs that help those less fortunate.

Although I may sometimes feel overwhelmed by schoolwork and teachers' demands, the lessons I've learned shape my mind and character and help me to develop skills for my future.

I am thankful and doubly blessed for the privilege to attend a private school and to take advantage of all the opportunities it provides.

THANKFUL, APPRECIATIVE FOR OUR NEXT PRESIDENT

2008 has been a testy year. Which is why this year, I give thanks to President-elect Barack Obama. Although he isn't in office yet, he's made strides toward improving economic conditions, education and connections with foreign countries.

He has also shown me that it doesn't matter what your background is, you can become anything. Now, anyone has the opportunity to do and become anything that they put their hearts and minds to.

I hoped for greatness and I think it will be given because we now have an excellent leader as the next U.S. president, and for that, I'm incredibly appreciative. Happy Thanksgiving!

GIVE THANKS ALL YEAR FOR THE THINGS WE HAVE

There is so much that I am thankful for this holiday season. I am grateful for my wonderful family who care for me and help me with anything and everything everyday.

I am grateful for the awesome friends I have who help getting through everyday a lot easier.

I am thankful for both of my parents having jobs in a world where people are losing their jobs every day because of the failing economy.

I am thankful for living in a country where I can live with freedom and protection by the brave men and women of our armed forces who protect our country every day.

I'm thankful for my health and the health of my family.

I'm thankful for having a safe place to live with a roof over my head.

I'm thankful for my education and I am thankful for the things that not many people can have.

But overall, I am thankful for everything I have.

But I think that we should not only give thanks and be grateful for the things we have just during this upcoming holiday season. We should give thanks year- round for the things we have.

Many of the great things we have we just take for granted. We should cherish these possessions that not everyone has the opportunity to have and appreciate them anytime we have the chance.

APPRECIATES HAVING A HOME, A SAFE HAVEN

Throughout our lives, whether it's in school, or at home, we're forced to share what we're thankful for during the holiday seasons.

Some of us say anything to get it over with, whether or not we actually mean it. That's pretty sad, considering I was one of them a few years ago. Until recently, I hadn't really understood the concept of being thankful; I just took everything for granted, but now I've come to really appreciate all of it.

I'm truly and especially thankful for the house I reside in. Not only does it provide me shelter from Hawai'i's unpredictable weather, but also because it's my safe haven, a place to relax. In addition it's a place in which my family gathers to commemorate holidays, and I'm truly grateful for it.

As I think of those less fortunate who do not have a "home" to spend their holidays in, I tend to value it more. I know that I really do have things that I can be genuinely thankful for!

GIVING THANKS SHOULD BE EVERYDAY HABIT

Thanksgiving isn't about the turkey or mashed potatoes. It isn't about the parties. It isn't about the sales on Black Friday, either.

We must realize the true meaning of the holiday — to give thanks.

Yes, it is important to be thankful for our family and friends, but that's a given.

We should also appreciate the smallest things that we hardly notice that actually make a big difference in our lives.

I am thankful for my eyesight. I wear glasses and I am truly blessed that I have not completely lost my eyesight. My eyes allow me to witness the beauties and imperfections of the world around me. My eyes allow me to see the people I love. My eyes allow me to read and gain knowledge. My eyes allow me to do so much that we never really give enough credit to.

Take the time to notice the little things. But don't limit yourself to expressing your gratitude once a year, make it an everyday habit.

THANKFUL FOR LOVING FAMILY AND FRIENDS

There are thousands of opportunities and events to be thankful for in a lifetime.

Whether it may be for health or modern technology, I guess it just depends on a person's priority or matter of perspective.

While I may not have the whole world at the palm of my hands, I am certainly thankful for many aspects in my life.

As clichι as it may sound, I am incredibly thankful for all the support and companionship that I receive from my family and friends. I appreciate the ability to share delightful experiences with them and learn a few things along the way.

These essential people give me opportunities to blossom and grow.

After all the complications in life, they understand, accept and nurture me for who I am.

Even though everyone goes through tough times, when you consider those less fortunate then you, you'll quickly realize just how much you have to be thankful for.

And I am thankful for my loving family and friends.

THANKS TO THOSE WHO WRITE ABOUT THE NEWS

Thanksgiving is time to reflect on what we all appreciate in our lives.

It is common that we are all grateful for our family, health and friends, but what else should we be thankful for?

Every Thanksgiving, I enjoy taking the time to appreciate things that don't normally get valued. This Thanksgiving, I believe that there is not enough credit given to the people who contribute to our daily lives, via news.

The people who work for the newspaper are always getting the report on new and interesting topics on time, every time.

I'd like to personally thank the news crew and all their efforts.

Mahalo to all of you who work hard to get the scoop and thanks for giving.

Jesse Fines

TODAY A REMINDER OF EVERYTHING ONE HAS

Thanksgiving is the day to be thankful, but why does it seem we are grateful only once a year?

Things for which we are thankful should reverberate though our minds daily. Something that I am grateful for, (that I'll try to daily recall), is my family.

A life without loved ones is a life I wouldn't like to experience.

I am especially thankful for my parents for being such good providers, supporters, encouragers and friends to me. I catch myself not actually needing anything more than I already have because they take such good care of me. Not many 15-year-olds could say they don't need anything.

Other essential things I take for granted are inventions. They make life better. A toilet to flush; a refrigerator to preserve foods; a computer to type and send letters of thankfulness, and so many more!

It is great to have a holiday when someone like me can be reminded of everything I have except for a constant thankful heart. That could be my New Year's resolution.

John Jarman

FRIENDS CAN HELP TO MAKE US STRONGER

Life in general has a lot of "dramas," especially for a high school student.

To get through problems or the "dramas," I can rely on my friends. They are there for me when I need advice, a favor or time to just hang out.

I am grateful to them because having such good friends has helped me very much. Although we may not be friends forever, my life has changed. Each struggle we went through together has built up different traits of myself and has made me stronger.

I remember when I would sit alone, letting the day pass by. I thought it was normal, but now I realize that I was missing out on life. I met a very kind person who was willing to spend time with me even though we never met. That moment brought me up and changed my view of life.

I am very thankful for having friends. I hope they know that and I hope we can be together for as long as possible.

Shannon Webb

THANKFUL FOR LIFE'S BLESSINGS, OPPORTUNITIES

This time of year, it's difficult not to find oneself reflecting on the good things in our lives.

I am grateful for great friends and family.

School is stressful, and on top of that, I've got a lot of other things going on that take up my time and energy. But my friends and family are always good for a shared laugh or a smile, no matter when or why.

They're really what keep me going, through all the other responsibilities I have.

I am grateful, also, that some of those responsibilities are also joys. It's sometimes hard to find time in the day to get to church, school and family responsibilities, while also participating in sports, but I wouldn't give any of it up.

The work I do within my school activities, my church activities and in sports is very fulfilling, and I am so thankful for the opportunity

For these blessings and opportunities, and all the others in my life, I am thankful.

LIFE IS THE GREATEST GIFT, BE THANKFUL

The gift of life, without it I would not be here, writing this letter, expressing, having the friends I have, being able to expand my education, and having everyone around me.

The gift of life leads to so many pathways and opportunities.

Life is what causes everything else around us.

Life is the pathway to many opportunities. Life is the greatest gift that anyone and everyone should be thankful for!

Alyssa Dixon

BE THANKFUL FOR HEALTH, LOVE AND EVEN YOUR PROBLEMS

I'm thankful for everything and everyone in my life, from friends and family to the basic necessities of life.

Most people in the world always see things in a negative light. "I don't like my hair." "Why do I have to go to school?" "She's so annoying!"

Thanksgiving is the time when we try to see the silver lining in every cloud. You don't like your hair but at least you don't have cancer and need chemotherapy. An education is a precious opportunity that not every child in the world is given. Cherish it and learn all you can just because you have the chance. Not everyone you meet is nice, but by dealing with different types of people you will learn to make friends with anyone you meet.

My philosophy is to try and see the positive in everything that is given to you in your life because it'll make your life that much happier.

Be thankful that you are healthy and alive to be reading this right now.

Be thankful for all the love you have received this year and also for being able to share your love with others.

Be thankful for the problems you have encountered for they will make you a better person.

Be thankful to be living in paradise. I know I am.

Crysta Yoshioka

THANKFUL FOR THOSE WHO ARE SELFLESS, THOUGHTFUL

If you ask most people what they're thankful for on Thanksgiving Day, a majority of them will say family, friends, good health, etc.

Yes, we're all thankful for such blessings in our lives, and yet one day out of the year is dedicated to showing our appreciation.

I'm thankful for all the people in the world who show the people they love that they are appreciated. These are the people who are selfless and thoughtful regardless of what time of the year it is. They help us to achieve a world with much less hate, and here in Hawai'i, keep the aloha spirit alive.

ISLAND FRIENDS AND ALL THE GREAT MEMORIES

When most people think of the Thanksgiving holiday, they would most likely think of spending that day with their entire family.

When I say the entire family, I am not just talking about the immediate family we live with. I am talking about the uncles, the aunties, the cousins, the grandparents and all of the rest of the special people in your 'ohana.

But the problem that I have with that fantasy is the important detail of all of my extended family. They live 4,000 miles away in Florida.

While I do love them with all my heart, fortunately I do indeed get to spend my Thanksgiving with another type of family. The one I made here.

I am so thankful for the fact that friends that my mother, my father, my brother and I have made here, are there when this holiday comes around.

Every year, we have a huge Thanksgiving feast, where my family and friends pitch in and bring a dish.

So on this Thanksgiving, I will thank those wonderful people I call family, for all the great memories made. You know who you are.

LOVE IS THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL

At this time of the year — when all the biggest holidays are just around the corner — I am especially thankful for that special four-letter word — Love.

For me, it feels wonderful to show how much I love someone, but I also enjoy the feeling of being loved in return.

Although I don't have a boyfriend, I have my family and friends to exchange love with.

For some of us, love is what fuels us to go to work or school everyday.

For some of us, love is all it takes for us to cook that wonderful turkey dinner on Thanksgiving.

For some of us, love is what takes us out of the house and onto the streets to buy those awaited Christmas gifts.

Love is the greatest gift of all and I am so thankful for it.

ALWAYTS

ALWAYS BE THANKFUL FOR FAMILY, FOR LOVED ONES

As the holidays approach, many people start busting out their pocketbooks and notepads trying to decide what to buy for others and what to add to their own lists of wants.

The 21st century is filled with all sorts of material goodies, from iPods to fancy phones.

However, we often forget to be grateful for the things we already have.

I know that I am thankful for all the great people who I think of everyday. My mom and dad, who have been with me since Day 1; Patrick, my brother, who always laughs at my jokes; Nancy, my sister, who is my eternal first mate; my school buddies Juliet and Sunshine; and, my long-distance friends LingLing and Lolo. Thank you all for everything.

It's hard to find people who genuinely care for your well being. So this year, don't forget to be thankful for all your loved ones.

THANKFUL FOR FAMILY AND FOR CHURCH

It's Thanksgiving, and it's the time of year when families and individuals give thanks toward their loved ones.

I give thanks everyday for having the Lord in my life. The Lord is the one who has blessed me with a house over my head, food on my table and a family who loves me.

I am also grateful to be in an organization that teaches me how to be a proper and successful young woman. My church offers prep college programs, gratifying Bible studies and teachings that will get me to heaven.

EVEN THANKFUL FOR 'ANNOYING' BROTHERS

I am thankful for many things, but I am most thankful for something, or rather someone, I never thought I would be thankful for, — my brothers.

My brothers and I never really got along growing up. We would spend most of the time fighting over silly things like the TV remote or who gets to sit in the front seat of the car.

When they went away for college, leaving only my sister and me home with our parents, I realized how much I really miss them.

Now when they come home for the holidays, we try to spend as much time as possible with each other and I really enjoy it.

I always have the best time with them because they always make me laugh.

As the saying goes "You don't know what you've got till it's gone." It proves you can also miss annoying brothers you couldn't wait to get rid of.

TRAVEL HAS BROADENED HORIZONS

I am most thankful for the opportunity to travel.

Since I was little I have had the opportunity to travel around the United States.

Because of this opportunity to travel, I stood on the battlefield at Gettysburg, was in the same room where our Founding Fathers composed the Declaration of Independence and got to see Old Faithful.

Not only have I had the chance to experience history "firsthand," but also, I got to spend time with my family.

From these travels, I gained an insight to what makes up our country. It also has allowed me to get to know my relatives.

THANKFUL FOR LIFE, FOR GOOD HEALTH

I am most thankful for the ability to walk, talk, see, feel and my overall good health.

Currently, especially with our slowing economy, people think mainly about what they do not have.

We forget to appreciate all that we do have and take for granted. i am thankful for everything that I have been given, for all of the wonderful people I have met in my life, for my education and being able to play sports. I am ultimately thankful for my life, without my life I would not have anything, no memories, stories or experiences. I am thankful for the chance to live.

FAMILY HELPED HER REACH POTENTIAL

Every November since kindergarten, I have, without fail, been asked to search deep into my soul and decide exactly what I am most truly thankful for.

Like all such exercises, it was never as easy as it seemed. I wanted to come up with something new and profound, but always ended up talking about stock topics, like my family, instead.

This year I will be graduating and leaving behind everything that I have become accustomed to.

Faced with this impending separation, I have discovered that blessings do not have to be great and profound.

I have discovered how thankful I am for my family. They are more than just the established answer to a cliched question. They are the people who have always been there for me and who always will.

They have helped me to reach my potential and loved me even when I fell short.

They are a true blessing, and one that I am proud to acknowledge.

A PRAYER THAT ALL WILL ENJOY FREEDOM SOME DAY

This Thanksgiving I am thankful for being able to live in the United States.

I remember days when my mom joked about us moving to Europe, and it never really hit me until recently how lucky I am to live in a country where I don't have to fear bombs when I walk outside and where I can freely express my freedoms of speech and religion.

This is a luxury not extended to many in our world. So, as I spend Thanksgiving Day with my wonderful family, my prayer is that one day, everyone in the world will be able to do the same — and not only on Thanksgiving, but on every day of every year.

ESPECIALLY THANKFUL FOR HER BROTHER

I have many things to be thankful for, but this Thanksgiving, I will be mainly thankful for having an older brother.

Although he doesn't act like he cares about me, he cooks me food when I'm hungry or sick. Sometimes he critiques my homework, which shows me he cares if my schoolwork is wrong.

Even though he teases me a lot, I know that he will always be there for me. And in the future I know he will be a good friend to others as well.

I love everyone in my family, but I am especially thankful for my brother.

YOU CAN EVEN BE THANKFUL FOR THE BUMPS IN LIFE

I am thankful for bumps along the road of life. Sometimes they seem to come out of nowhere, and hit you when you least expect it; at other times you can see them approaching from the horizon, But no matter how they come about, they test your strength and faith all the same.

Some bumps are so big you don't know how you'll get over them — but somehow you do.

As long as you remember, "If He brings you to it, He'll bring you through it," and you know you have people to help you over them, you can be thankful for the bumps.

THANKFUL FOR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND GOD

I am thankful for the leaves on the trees and the sun and the moon.

I am thankful for the warm seas that surround O'ahu.

I am thankful for the magnificent mountains that cast shadows on the land.

I am thankful for my friends, who bring happiness to my life.

I am thankful for my family, who give me wisdom.

I am thankful for God, who gave all of this to me.

LITTLE SISTER OFFERS LIFE LESSONS

I am thankful for my little sister. She teaches me something new everyday.

Her enthusiasm to try new things, like riding her bike without training wheels, or interacting with every critter crossing her path, takes me back to the carefree, lively days of childhood.

I had forgotten what life was like when I was 6 and always had serious attitude toward horseplay, practical jokes and childlike affection. I felt the pressures of responsibility, adolescence and my peers squeezing out my inner child.

My sister saved me. She taught me to show love for all creatures and to laugh at myself when I trip and fall.

She welcomes everyone with a smile despite her two front teeth.

She willingly tries a food she's never tasted, attempts to ride a skateboard down the sidewalk and lets her imagination take her to a whole new world.

I am thankful for my sister, whose genuine attitude for life has impacted mine in more ways than one.

NANANG OFFERS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

I am very thankful for many things, but this year, I am most thankful for my maternal great-grandmother, Perpetua Amian, 94, one of the important female characters in my life.

She is a strong woman with unconditional love for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Two years ago, doctors told her she had six months to live, but her faith, spirit and love kept her going.

She was even able to come to my speech competition. I am so thankful for her — I love you, Nanang!

THANKFUL FOR VOTERS, TROOPS AND TEACHERS

This year, I have a variety of things to be thankful for.

I give thanks to our 2008 voters who made a choice.

There were first-time voters who made a difference. I give thanks to President-elect Barack Obama for a promising future during his time in the White House.

I also give thanks for our troops fighting to keep peace and tranquility in the United States.

I hope they come home for the holidays to be with their families.

Last, but not least, I give thanks to my teachers, and all teachers who are educating our younger generation. They are teaching us to become better students and, best of all, to become better citizens of the United States.

THANKFUL FOR A NEW BABY IN THE FAMILY

This year, I am particularly thankful that my Aunty Teresa is going to have a baby.

She is having twins! I was so excited when she told me on the phone, "Aye! I'm so happy! Twins!"

BLESSINGS FROM EVERYONE IN HER LIFE

This Thanksgiving, I am grateful for many blessings even though our country is in turmoil.

I am thankful for my sister, who always pushes me to strive for excellence, and my best friend, who has been with me through many challenges.

But, most of all I am thankful for being able to live in Hawai'i, a place where families are built, not only through blood relationships but on other bases.

I've lost my mother and father and my sister has moved away — I can't think of anyone else I'm "related" to — but living here makes me know that I have "family" everywhere I turn.

Everyone has become my cousin, my aunt, my uncle — my family is every growing and ever changing.

This is what I will count as my blessings this Thanksgiving — everyone who is in my life.

GRATEFUL FOR THE THINGS WE TAKE FOR GRANTED

I was watching the news a few nights ago and saw a clip about a blind boy who could do everything from biking to playing video games by using a new special sound technology. It got me to thinking that I am so thankful for just being able to see.

Each Thanksgiving, I count my blessings — my family, friends, home, school and track team!

But this year, I'm back to the basics — I am not only so grateful for my sight, but also for the technology that allows those who cannot see survive and flourish in the world.

I have often taken my fully functioning body for granted, but no more! I am so lucky and very thankful.

GRATEFUL FOR EDUCATION AND FOR ACCEPTANCE

In this Thanksgiving month, I am the most thankful for the acceptances that I have received at my school.

As an alien to this country, I am always aware of others' discrimination that I am a Chinese person not from Hawai'i.

However, I have felt so many equitable treatments from my teachers and my friends. I am able to receive the same education as everyone else. I am equal to all. I feel so grateful for this acceptance and my plan is to study rigorously in order to give back to my teachers, friends, school and country.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU FOR A SPECIAL GRANDPA

This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for the computer, the family and my grandfather.

I am most thankful for my grandpa because I have come to realize that he is a very important figure in everything I do.

My other grandfather passed away, and I regret not being close to him. So, I decided that I would really build a special relationship with the only grandpa I have left.

He is the best, and I thank God for my blessings on this Thanksgiving, my grandfather will be No. 1.
