Hawaii Pacific tips Pacific

Mike Helton scored four points in the final 19 seconds as Hawai'i Pacific beat Pacific University (Pacific Grove, Ore.), 82-78, last night in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Blaisdell Arena.

Jason Curtis had 20 points and 11 assists for the Sea Warriors (1-1). Carson Bartlett led the Boxers (1-1) with 22 points.

Helton hit two free throws with 19 seconds to play, putting HPU ahead 79-78, then stole the in-bounds pass and scored on a layup to make it 81-78.

BYUH ROLLS, 108-92

Lucas Alves scored 28 points as host Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Western New Mexico, 108-92, last night in a non-conference game.

Trenson Akana hit 6 of 8 3-point attempts and scored 23 points for the Seasiders (3-0). DJ Nicholas had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs (2-2).

CHING LIFTS DYNAMO

Brian Ching, a Kamehameha Schools graduate from Hale'iwa, scored in the 13th minute, and the host Houston Dynamo held on for a 1-0 win over CD Luis Angel Firpo in the CONCACAF Champions League Group B last night.

Houston advances to the quarterfinal round of the CONCACAF Champions League tournament.

Ching scored on a header off a corner kick by Dwayne De Rosario. De Rosario kicked the corner from the left side and found Ching in the middle of the box. Ching headed the ball off goalie Juan Jose Gomez and into the net.
