THE VERDICT: 5

THE RATINGS

5 — Outstanding: Add it to your collection now. A must-have.

4 — Great: Buy it or rent it — definitely play it.

3 — Good: Worth playing despite some flaws.

2 — Fair: Unless you're a fan of the license or series, don't bother.

1 — Poor: You'd have more fun playing "Pong."

Game: "Soul Calibur IV"

Console: Xbox 360; also available for PlayStation 3

Developer/publisher: Namco/Bandai

Genre: Fighting

Number of players: 1-2 online enabled (finally)

Rated: Teen, for mild language, partial nudity, sexual themes, violence

The premise: Warriors from all over the world are drawn together by the good of Soul Edge and the evil of Soul Calibur. Square off for the fifth time on multiple platforms, each with its own special "Star Wars" character. Yoda is "exclusive" for the Xbox 360; Darth Vader is "exclusive" for the PlayStation 3.

Game play: This is straight-up brawling, with weapons. These fighters employ styles from nunchaku to pole fighting, and there are some you might have not heard of, such as razor ring.

The good/bad:

Good: I'm happy to see all of these returning characters. There's nothing worse than falling in love with a character and then that character ceases to exist.

Bad: Even after setting the language option to Japanese, I am forced to endure the overblown announcer in English.

Good: Hearing Yoda in Japanese!

Bad: The extremely cheap boss character Zazamel makes a return from "Soul Calibur III," much to my dismay.

Tips: Pick a character after having practiced every one of his moves.

Against the computer, don't be afraid to use cheap tactics such as doing the same thing over and over. The computer will not hesitate to use cheap tactics on you.

Familiarize yourself with each opponent's fighting style so you aren't surprised when encountering an up-close fighter or a long-distance fighter.

My take: Another great entry from a great fighting series, from the much-needed online fighting to the return of the system-exclusive character. All that's missing is a Wii version in which you can play Darth Maul, Leia, Luke or Link. You will find yourself playing the game over and over to unlock all the goodies and characters. This is one of the few series that gets better and better as time goes on.

I can't find anything wrong with this game, so I am giving it a 5 for all you fighting fans out there. Pick it up!
