Volleyball honors for UHH duo

Hawai'i-Hilo's Josimara Pinheiro and Fabiane Seben, and Kalani High graduate Brandie Vea of Central Washington have been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's NCAA Division II All-West Regional team.

Pinheiro, a junior middle blocker, led the Pacific West Conference in kill average (3.83), points per game (4.41) and total points (463.5). She ranked seventh in hitting (.249).

Seben, also a junior middle blocker, topped the PacWest in blocks per game (1.26), total blocks (132), block assists (119) and total service aces (50), and ranked second in hitting (.301).

Vea, a defensive specialist/libero, was named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference first team.

Hawai'i-Hilo sophomore Emily Tooker, who led PacWest setters with 1,095 assists and a 10.63 per game average, was named honorable mention All-West.


BASKETBALL

HILO WOMEN FALL

Jessica Summers had 19 points and 17 rebounds as Western Washington beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 87-61, last night in the UH-Hilo Women's Invitational at the Konawaena High gym.

Marelle Moehrle added 18 points for Western Washington (5-1).

Ashley Kualii scored 12 points and Jessica Hanato 10 for Hilo (2-1).

HPU WOMEN LOSE

Lauren Peters scored 14 points as Holy Family beat Hawai'i Pacific, 68-50, yesterday in the North Star Invitational at Fairbanks, Alaska.

Christine McCollom added 13 points for the Tigers (4-3).

Angela Spence scored 11 points and Paris Gravely 10 for the Sea Warriors (1-4).

HPU MEN LOSE, TOO

Devin Stewart had 23 points and 13 assists as Western New Mexico held off Hawai'i Pacific, 84-78, last night in a non-conference men's game at Blaisdell Arena.

Steve Berrelleza added 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs (3-3).

Jeff Ingram scored 19 points, Jason Curtis added 18, and Chris Evans contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Sea Warriors (1-2).


RUNNING

GREAT ALOHA PARTY

The Great Aloha Run, in celebration of its 25th anniversary, will hold a kickoff party Thursday.

The party will be at Fort Street Mall between the Bank of Hawaii and Pioneer Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Participants can register for the run at the party ($35) and receive a free T-shirt.

The Great Aloha Run is Feb. 16.
