Marathon: Ex-champs will run in New York

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Former champions Paul Tergat of Kenya, Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa and Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil will compete in the New York City Marathon on Nov. 2.

Catherine Ndereba of Kenya also will be in the field, New York Road Runners president Mary Wittenberg said today.

Also announced were former champions Tegla Loroupe of Kenya, champion Joyce Chepchumba of Kenya and Ludmila Petrova of Russia, who will be competing in her eighth New York City Marathon.

Rita Jeptoo of Kenya and Abderrahim Goumri of Morocco also join the field.

Defending champion Paula Radcliffe of Britain announced Wednesday she will return.

"With so many running greats returning to the streets of New York, including Paula to defend her title, it is sure to be a memorable race," Wittenberg said.
