Three Hawaii baseball teams to play in Arizona

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Three teams from Hawai'i will compete in the Arizona Senior Fall Classic baseball showcase Oct. 16 to 19.

Team Hawaii has sent two teams the past couple years and will again send its Gold and Blue teams. Joining them this year is ABD West, which is part of the ABD program in California. The program has California entrants, as well as the new team composed of Hawai'i players.

The showcase is held at the Peoria Sports Complex, the spring training site for the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners and is viewed by pro scouts and college recruiters.

Some football players might miss games that weekend. Among them is Saint Louis defensive lineman Moses Samia, an Advertiser All-State selection at designated hitter last season. He is on Team Hawaii-Blue. On Oct. 18, the Crusaders football team plays Word of Life at Aloha Stadium. Saint Louis football coach John Hao said he has been talking to Samia's family about the situation.

"He's a special kid that can be drafted (for baseball)," Hao said. "If you can get paid to play baseball, by all means, go. (The family) has my blessing."

Samia, a junior, batted .473 with 25 RBIs during last year's Interscholastic League of Honolulu season.

It appeared earlier that 'Iolani was going to be adversely affected. Both its quarterbacks, Jarrett Arakawa and Kela Marciel, were listed on ABD West. But one of the ABD coaches, Paul Tamashiro, said Arakawa has decided not to travel and that Marciel will join the traveling party on Oct. 18. That enables Marciel to play the Oct. 17 afternoon game against Punahou.

Punahou defensive back Shane Yoshiyama is on Team Hawaii-Blue. He will miss the football game. Team Hawaii coordinator Duane Eldredge said Yoshiyama plans to travel with the team.

Kamehameha linebacker Pi'ikea Kitamura said he will miss his football game against Pac-Five Oct. 18. He is on ABD West.

Other football players on the baseball rosters are Damien's Michael Memea and Kapolei's Kalani Brackenridge. Both are on Team Hawaii-Gold.

Kapolei might not be affected that weekend if the Hurricanes finish in the top four of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West. The top four teams have byes the first week of the OIA playoffs.

Damien has a bye that weekend.

ABD West has a scrimmage 3 p.m. Sunday at Mid-Pacific. Tamashiro said the scrimmage will follow the format of the showcase in which five batters or three outs constitute each half inning. Showcases are designed for player evaluation, not determining a team champion.
