Mental Health America in Maui County, formerly the Mental Health Association in Maui, will present a free public forum Tuesday on Aikea: Youth Suicide Prevention.

The brown-bag event, organized in observance of Mental Health Awareness Week, will begin at 11 a.m. at the Cameron Center.

Speakers include Lou Kepler of the Department of Health, who will provide youth suicide prevention tips, and Bud Bowles, director of United Self Help, which provides support groups for people with depression and other mental illnesses and classes for mental health consumers and friends on mental illnesses, care and recovery.

Dr. Jason Andrus, medical director of the Molokini Youth inpatient unit at Maui Memorial Medical Center, will share his team's approach to preventing suicide.

Co-sponsors of the forum include the Children's Community Council of Maui, Maui Family Guidance Center, NAMI Hawaii and NAMI Maui. Two continuing-education credits are available for a fee for those who sign up by 10:30 a.m.
