A Kahului woman ran over her 1-year-old son today as she was backing her car out of her driveway, according to the Maui County Police Department.

The baby boy sustained "critical, life-threatening injuries" and was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center. The accident occurred at 8:10 this morning.

Speed and alcohol are not suspected to be involved, police said. Maui police are investigating what is being classified as a near fatal pedestrian accident.
