Hilo detectives last night charged Desmond Lewi, 31, of Keaukaha with second-degree murder and other offenses stemming from a Sunday morning shooting in Hilo.

Hilo police officers responded to a report of a fight and the sound of gunshots at 9:07 a.m. Sunday and found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to the Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:20 a.m. The shooting victim has been identified as Cameron Mauga of Hilo.

Lewi was arrested on Kauhane Street shortly after the shooting, police said. They described the victim and suspect as acquaintances.

In addition to murder, Lewi was charged with the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and two additional firearm offenses.

He was held over night in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $1,000,000 bail, and is scheduled to make his initial court appearance this afternoon in South Hilo District Court.

An autopsy is scheduled for this morning to determine the exact cause of Mauga's death.

Investigators are also asking for public assistance in finding David Lewi, 30, Desmond Lewi's brother, who they believe to have information related to the investigation. David Lewi is described as about 5-feet-6, 130 pounds with a medium build, black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about the case or the whereabouts of David Lewi is asked to call Detective Norbert Serrao at 808-961-2383 of the Hawai'i Police Department's non-emergency line at 808-935-3311.
