Army man killed in Maui traffic collision

Advertiser Staff

An Army man was killed last night in a traffic collision on Maui involving a sports utility vehicle and a motorcycle.

Maui traffic investigators said Taylor D. Norris, 26, was driving a 2005 BMW X5 sports utility vehicle, which rear-ended a motorcycle on Honoapi'ilani Highway, 869 feet south of Ka'anapali Parkway in Lahaina at 11:46 p.m.

Norris, who had a California driver's license, was on leave while transferring from a duty station in South Korea to a new assignment in Texas. Norris was killed when the impact of the collision caused his vehicle to veer off the roadway and hit two trees before bursting into flames.

Norris was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcyclist, a 50-year-old Lahaina man, was taken in serious condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center and later transferred to a unnamed hospital on O'ahu. He was wearing his helmet, police said.

Norris is Maui's 15th traffic fatality of 2008 as compared to 17 at the same time last year.
