Stanford's Chun trails by one shot in Washington

Stanford senior Mari Chun, a 2005 graduate of Kamehameha from Pearl City, is one stroke behind leader Kay Hoey of Long Beach State, heading into today's final round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash.

Chun shot rounds of 75 and 71 for a 2-over 146 at the par-72 Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash. The Cardinal are first in the team competition, two strokes ahead of Oregon.

New Mexico junior Britney Choy, a 2006 Leilehua graduate from Wahiawa, is currently in 68th, after shooting 88-85—173. The Lobos are 12th out of 13 teams.

  • Arizona senior Amanda Wilson (Waiakea '04 of Hilo) finished tied for 9th at the Windy City Collegiate Championships, which concluded yesterday at the par-72 Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill. Wilson shot rounds of 75, 76 and 73 to finish at 8-over par 224. The Wildcats finished fourth.

  • Nevada sophomore Kellen Watabu (Kaua'i '06 of Kapa'a) finished tied for 65th at the Wolf Pack Classic, which concluded yesterday at the par-72 Wolf Run Golf Club in Reno, Nev. Watabu shot rounds of 80, 77 and 75 to finish at 16-over par 232. Nevada finished tied for 4th.

  • San Diego freshman Alex Ching (Punahou '08 of Honolulu) finished tied for 50th at the Fighting Irish Gridon Classic, which wrapped up yesterday at the par-70 Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. Ching shot rounds of 79, 73 and 77 to finish 19-over par 229. The Torreros finished 12th in the team competition. San Francisco senior Kurt Nino (Damien '05 of Honolulu) finished at 18-over par 228. Nino shot rounds of 82, 74 and 72 to finish tied for 47th place. The Dons placed 10th.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Washington junior libero Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani '05 of Kane'ohe) had a match-high 26 digs with two assists and an ace in a three-set loss to California Friday. In another three-set loss to Stanford Sunday, Miyashiro notched 13 digs and three assists. The Huskies fell one spot to 10th in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I Coaches' Top 25 poll.

  • Oregon State junior setter Camilla Ah-Hoy (Kahuku '06 of La'ie) had 45 assists, 15 digs, six blocks and a kill in a five-set win over Southern California Friday. In a five-set loss to UCLA Saturday, Ah-Hoy dished out 39 assists with 15 digs and three kills. The Beavers (12-5, 1-3 Pac-10) earned a No. 24 ranking in this week's AVCA poll.

  • St. John's (N.Y.) senior libero Lena Yee (Moanalua '05 of Honolulu) had 18 digs, three assists and an ace in a four-set loss at Marquette Friday. Yee recorded 18 more digs in Sunday's four-set win over Syracuse. Senior defensive specialist Marissa Kanemura (University High '05 of Honolulu) had 11 digs and two assists for the Orange.

  • Fairfield (Conn.) senior libero Brandi Higa (Hawai'i Baptist '04 of Honolulu) had 16 digs and two aces in a sweep of Niagara Saturday. Freshman outside hitter Haililani Pokipala (Sacred Hearts '08 of Honolulu) added 10 digs and two aces. Higa recorded 13 digs and two assists and Pokipala nine digs, four aces and two assists in Sunday's sweep of Canisius.

  • Nevada sophomore outside hitter Kylie Harrington (St. Francis '07 of Honolulu) had 12 kills and 12 digs in a five-set loss to Idaho Thursday. Freshman setter Tatiana Santiago (Kamehameha '08 of Kahuku) had 53 assists and 10 digs for the Wolf Pack. In Saturday's four-set win over Boise State, Harrington went for 12 kills, seven digs, two aces and two blocks, and Santiago added three digs and two assists.

  • South Dakota State sophomore setter Melia Iwamoto (Kalani '07 of Honolulu) had 27 assists, three digs and an ace in a three-set loss to IPFW Friday. Against Oakland (Mich.) Saturday, Iwamoto had 34 assists and five digs in a three-set sweep.

  • St. Mary's (Calif.) sophomore setter Kapua Kamana'o ('Iolani '07 of Honolulu) racked up 58 assists, 12 digs, four kills, four aces and two blocks in a five-set loss to Pepperdine Friday. Junior middle blocker Megan Burton ('Iolani '06 of Kapolei) had 16 kills against no errors on 24 attempts (.667 hitting percentage) with three digs and was in on eight blocks. Freshman outside hitter Chanteal Satele (Word of Life '08 of Mililani) recorded six kills, five blocks and a dig for the Gaels. In Saturday's four-set win over LMU, Kamana'o had 55 assists, nine digs, five blocks, four kills and an ace while Burton went for 15 kills, four blocks and two digs. Freshman libero Diana Hiromoto (Punahou '08 of Honolulu) had four digs for the Lions.

  • Colgate (N.Y.) sophomore outside hitter Logan Keala (Kamehameha '07 of Kane'ohe) had nine digs, six kills and two blocks in a four-set loss at Army Saturday.

  • Siena (N.Y.) junior defensive specialist Kau'i Robello (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) had 14 digs and five kills in a sweep of Loyola (Md.) Saturday. Senior libero Kathi Kobayashi (Punahou '05 of 'Aiea) added 10 digs, two aces, one kill and one assist. In a sweep of Rider (N.J.) Sunday, Kobayashi collected a team-high 17 digs with one ace and an assist while Robello had 16 digs, seven kills and three assists for the Saints.

  • Pacific (Ore.) freshman middle blocker Kelsy Takashima (Moloka'i '08 of Kaunakakai) had 22 kills and four digs in a five-set win over Willamette Friday. Freshman defensive specialist Mari Kondo (Mid-Pacific '07 of 'Ewa Beach) had a match-high 20 digs and sophomore setter Lia Nishikura (Mililani '07) added 11 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Christiana Chandler (Leilehua '07 of Wahiawa) recorded eight assists, three digs and two kills. In a three-set loss at Linfield Saturday, Takashima had seven kills and Kondo added seven digs. Freshman outside hitter Samantha Lau (St. Francis '08 of Kailua) had a match-high 23 digs with six kills and three aces for the Wildcats. She had 16 digs Friday in a loss to George Fox.

  • Whitworth freshman outside hitter Kaimi Rocha (Seabury Hall '08 of Pukalani) had 14 kills and 15 digs in a four-set win over then-No. 10 Puget Sound Friday. Rocha went for 14 kills and 10 digs in Saturday's four-set loss to Pacific Lutheran. Her twin, Ka'ipo Rocha (Seabury Hall '08 of Pukalani), also posted 14 kills for the Pirates.

  • Central Washington sophomore libero Brandie Vea (Kalani '07 of Honolulu) had a team-high 30 digs and three assists in a five-set win over Northwest Nazarene Saturday.

  • Regis (Colo.) freshman defensive specialist Cassidee Young (Kamehameha '08 of Pearl City) had a match-high 14 digs with three assists and an ace in a four-set win over Mesa State Saturday.

  • Manhattanville (N.Y.) freshman middle hitter Makana Gomes ('Iolani '08 of Honolulu) had seven kills, nine digs and three aces in a three-set loss to Delaware Valley Friday. On Saturday, Gomes recorded 18 kills, 25 digs and three aces in a split against Mount Saint Mary (won in five) and Vassar (lost in three).

  • Redlands (Calif.) junior setter Kelina Smith (Waiakea '06 of Kurtistown) had 15 assists, six digs and an ace in a sweep of La Serra Thursday. Smith dished out 33 assists with 14 digs, two aces, one kill and a block in a five-set win over Whittier Friday. Senior libero Dory Baga (University High '05 of 'Aiea) added four digs. However, the Bulldogs were swept by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps later that afternoon. In that match, Smith collected 30 assists, 11 digs, one kill and a block while Baga had five digs and an assist.

  • Bryan (Tenn.) freshman libero Jessica Kaya (Word of Life '08 of Honolulu) had 20 digs in a three-set sweep of Milligan Friday. Kaya, who was named Libero of the Week by the Appalachian Athletic Conference, has had 20 or more digs in three of her last four matches. The Lions (15-3, 4-0 AAC) fell one spot in this week's National Christian College Athletic Association poll to fifth.

    FOOTBALL

  • Utah junior linebacker Kepa Gaison (Kamehameha '05 of Kane'ohe) had six tackles in a 31-28 win over Oregon State last Thursday. Oregon State senior safety Al Afalava (Kahuku '05 of La'ie) returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown and had three tackles. Sophomore safety Suaesi Tuimaunei (Kahuku '06) was in on two tackles for the Beavers.

  • Southern California senior linebacker Kaluka Maiava (Baldwin '04 of Wailuku) had eight tackles in the Trojans' 44-10 rout of Oregon Saturday. Sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Masoli (Saint Louis '06) passed for 156 yards on 18-of-29 passing for the Ducks.

  • Kentucky junior linebacker Mikhail Mabry (Mililani '04) had three tackles in the Wildcats' 17-14 loss at No. 2 Alabama Saturday. Mabry, whose tackles came on special teams, is the top backup at middle linebacker.

  • Washington senior defensive end Daniel Te'o-Nesheim (Hawai'i Prep '04 of Waikoloa) had eight tackles, including three sacks that resulted in a loss of 22 yards, in the Huskies' 48-18 loss at Arizona Saturday.

  • Montana-Western freshman quarterback Micah Mamiya (Saint Louis '08 of Honolulu) was named Offensive Player of the Week by the Frontier Conference after leading Montana-Western to a 35-32 win at Rocky Mountain Saturday. Mamiya passed for 403 yards and four touchdowns on 27-of-43 passing. He also gained 36 yards on eight rushes.

  • Chapman (Calif.) senior defensive back Chris Shiramizu (Punahou '04 of Kaimuki) intercepted a fourth-down pass in the fourth quarter to help secure Saturday's 17-3 win over Pomona-Pitzer. Shiramizu finished with four tackles, including one for a loss of five yards. Junior receiver Kaleo Perez (Kamehameha '06 of Lihu'e) had eight receptions for 97 yards, both game highs.

    MEN'S SOCCER

  • Loyola Marymount senior defender Stephen Carlson (Punahou '04 of Honolulu) assisted on the game-winning goal of Thursday's 2-1 overtime win over Cal State Bakersfield. Carlson fed freshman Fernando Barbara, who scored his first career goal just 27 seconds into overtime.

  • St. Mary's senior midfielder Justin Kim (Mililani '04) assisted on a goal in the 43rd minute of a 2-1 win over LMU Sunday. Mark Araujo scored on a header off of Kim's throw-in.

  • Washington sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Fung ('Iolani '06 of Honolulu) made two saves in a 1-0 victory over Stanford Friday. Fung made five saves in a 2-2 double-overtime tie against California Sunday.

  • Gonzaga sophomore forward/midfielder Nick Love (Punahou '07 of Kane'ohe) assisted on the game-winning goal of Friday's 2-1 overtime win over Santa Clara. Love found Ben Funkhouser, who scored from 30 yards.

  • Franklin Pierce (N.H.) freshman defender Michael Busto (Punahou '08 of Honolulu) scored his first career goal — a game winner in the 83rd minute of last Wednesday's 2-1 win at Saint Anselm. In a 6-0 shutout of Mercy Saturday, Busto assisted on a goal in the 72nd minute for the Ravens.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • Denver junior midfielder Lizzy Carlson (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) scored in the 24th minute of Sunday's 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic. It was her second goal of the year.

  • St. Mary's (Calif.) junior midfielder Ashley Nied (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) scored her fifth goal of the year in the 97th minute of a 1-0 overtime win over San Jose State Friday.

  • Azusa Pacific senior forward Sarah Yoro (Mililani '05) scored two goals in a 6-0 win over Fresno Pacific last week. Yoro scored in the seventh minute off an assist from a corner kick and in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick. She has seven goals this season.

    CROSS COUNTRY

  • Pepperdine sophomore Chelsea Wishard (Kaua'i '07 of Lawai) was seventh out of 52 runners at Saturday's Pepperdine Invitational with a 6K time of 21:39.22. Wishard has been Pepperdine's top finisher at all five meets this season. The Waves placed second out of five teams with 54 points.

  • Portland State freshman Joey Amescua (Baldwin '08 of Kahului) was 181st out of 202 runners with an 8K time of 31:05.33 in the gold division race at Saturday's Charles Bowles Invitational. The Vikings finished seventh out of 15 teams with 208 points. In the cardinal division race, Casey Nishimura (Mid-Pacific '07 of Hawai'i Kai) of Pacific (Ore.) finished 241st out of 301 runners in 29:11.75. Teammate Blake Picadura (Kamehameha '08 of Kailua) was 280th in 31:31.11. The Boxers placed 29th out of 30 teams with 794 points. In the women's 5K cardinal race, Eastern Oregon's Keilani Wasson (Kahuku '08 of La'ie) was 202nd out of 288 runners in 21:07.15. Willamette (Ore.) freshman Melissa Kawana (Mililani '08) was 230th in 21:39.14. Willamette finished fifth out of 28 teams with 223 points and Eastern Oregon was 21st with 567.

  • Davidson senior Emily King (Moanalua '05 of Honolulu) finished 103rd out of 265 runners at Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic with a 5K time of 19:09.89. The Wildcats finished 11th out of 32 teams with 326 points.

  • At Friday's Pacific Union Invitational, Christal Nishikawa (Hawaiian Mission '05) of Pacific Union finished 17th out of 35 runners with a 5K time of 26:15. Mills (Calif.) freshman Jodessa Lanzaderas (Farrington '08 of Honolulu) finished 28th in 29:43. Mills finished first out of three teams with 19 points and Pacific Union was second with 46.

    MEN'S WATER POLO

  • Loyola Marymount sophomore driver Andrew Aki (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) scored three goals last week in routs of UC Santa Cruz, 17-2, and Harvard, 19-4.

    TENNIS

  • DePauw (Ill.) sophomore Janelle Arita (Punahou '07 of Mililani) advanced to the singles final of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional two weeks ago. Arita, who was NCAA Division III Rookie of the Year last season, won five matches before falling to Chicago's Jennifer Kung, 6-0, 6-2.

  • Redlands (Calif.) sophomore Paige Sumida (Waiakea '07 of Hilo) and freshman Sara Yoshinaga ('Iolani '08 of Honolulu) finished second in doubles at the ITA West Regional, which concluded Monday in Claremont, Calif. Sumida also reached the finals of the singles draw before she fell to Chapman's Liz Lewis, the No. 1 seed.

    SAILING

  • Harvard junior Drew Robb (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) teamed with Lauren Brants to finish second in the A Division at the Smith Trophy Regatta in Cambridge, Mass. last weekend. The pair placed in the top five in eight of the 10 races, including three first-place finishes.
