Kalish's three-run shot lifts Honu, 5-4

Designated hitter Ryan Kalish hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the North Shore Honu to a 5-4 victory over the West Oahu CaneFires last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

Adam Davis led off the inning with a bunt single. After Corey Brown struck out, Kyle Martin doubled to left, with Davis stopping at third. Kalish then homered to end the game.

North Shore improved to 4-6; West Oahu fell to 6-5.

In the first game, Satoshi Nagai scattered two hits over five innings and two relievers finished the seven-inning, two-hitter as the Honolulu Sharks beat the Waikiki BeachBoys, 4-0.

Nagai (3-0) struck out six with no walks, Roy Merritt worked the sixth inning and Blake King pitched the seventh for the Sharks (7-3), who scored a run in the fourth and three in the sixth.

Waikiki fell to 3-7.


SURFING

ABUBO, BARTELS WIN

Hawai'i surfers Megan Abubo and Melanie Bartels advanced to the third round of the Beachley Classic women's contest yesterday.

The first and second rounds were run in 2- to 3-foot waves at Freshwater Beach, Manly, Australia. Abubo won her first-round heat to advance directly to the third round.

Bartels lost in the first round, but rebounded with a win in the second round.

Australian Layne Beachley, who is the sponsor of the contest, announced her retirement yesterday. She said this will be her final year on the women's world tour.

Beachley, 36, has won a women's record seven world championships.


SOCCER

LATE GOAL LIFTS BYUH

Emily Mearns chased down a long pass from Tasha Aiono and scored with less than a minute to play, lifting Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 1-0 women's victory over Hawai'i Pacific yesterday at Kane'ohe.

Mearns' goal at the 89:25 mark helped the Seasiders improve to 8-3-1. The Sea Warriors fell to 2-7.

UHH WOMEN WIN

Vanessa Butin scored two goals to lead Hawai'i-Hilo to a 4-0 rout of Chaminade yesterday in a women's match at Kea'au on the Big Island,

Adele Letro and Megan Pachecano added goals for the Vulcans (7-3). The Silverswords fell to 1-7.

HPU MEN BEAT BYUH

Andre Whitt and James Terry scored second-half goals as Hawai'i Pacific shutout Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 2-0, yesterday in a men's match at Kane'ohe.

The Sea Warriors improved to 4-3-1. The Seasiders fell to 3-8-1.

UH-HILO MEN ROMP

Dustin Daley scored two goals and Gene Okamura had one, powering the Hawai'i-Hilo men to a 3-0 victory over Chaminade yesterday in Hilo.

The Vulcans improved to 6-2. Chaminade fell to 1-11-1.


VOLLEYBALL

BYUH SWEEPS

Losaline Faka'osi had 13 kills to lead the Brigham Young-Hawai'i women to a 25-14, 25-13, 25-17 Pacific West Conference sweep of Notre Dame de Namur last night at Belmont, Calif.

The Seasiders improved to 8-5 overall, 5-0 in conference. The Argonauts fell to 1-22 and 0-7.
