Playing in snow flurries and 31-degree weather, the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team lost its Western Athletic Conference opener last night, falling, 1-0, to host Nevada at Reno, Nev.

The Rainbow Wahine (4-5-3, 0-1) outshot the Wolf Pack (1-9-2, 1-0) 16-10, including 10-1 on shots on goal. However, Patrice Godwin was the lone player to penetrate the goal when she scored on a header to the back post in the 67th minute.

SURFING

BARTELS, ABUBO OUSTED

On a day marked by the stunning upset of reigning ASP world champion Stephanie Gilmore, Hawai'i's Melanie Bartels was also a victim at the Beachley Classic yesterday in Manly Beach, Australia.

Bartels, who won the previous tour event in Brazil, was ousted in round three by Australia's Rebecca Woods, 12.75-12.00, in clean 2- to 3-foot surf.

"Bartels is a scary competitor because she can bring anything out at any time," Woods said. "She's definitely a tough competition. It's a great result for me to crack the quarterfinals."

Hawai'i's Megan Abubo was also eliminated, falling to Brazil's Silvana Lima, 15.50-10.75.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old Tyler Wright of Australia, a wildcard entry and the trials winner, ousted two-time defending Beachley champion Gilmore, 11.85-11.00.
