UH soccer team plays Fresno St. to 0-0 draw

Playing in a school-record eighth overtime match of the season, the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team battled host Fresno State to a 0-0 standoff yesterday in Western Athletic Conference play at Fresno, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine (4-5-4, 0-1-1 WAC) outshot the Bulldogs (5-7-2, 1-0-1) 12-6, including 11-4 on goal.

Taryn Fukuroku had three shots on goal and keeper Kori Lu made four saves while playing all 110 minutes.

Fresno State keeper Kaitlyn Revel made 11 saves.

HPU SWEEPS CU

Austin Gibbons had a goal and an assist as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Chaminade, 4-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's match at HPU's Atherton Field.

Max Anton, Adam Rieke and Sven Blauth also scored for HPU (5-3-1, 3-0). Garrett Barker took four shots, two on goal, for Chaminade (1-12-1, 0-6).

In a women's match, Tami Kalaiwaa and Nicole Bleidistel scored goals as HPU beat Chaminade, 2-0. Jamie Hirai assisted on both goals for HPU (3-7, 1-2). Ona Byers had two shots on goal for Chaminade (1-9, 0-6).


GOLF

KUA WINS AT TURTLE BAY

University of Hawai'i freshman TJ Kua shot a final-round 1-over-par 73 yesterday to hold off defending champion Bradley Shigezawa and win the sixth annual Turtle Bay Amateur by two strokes.

Kua finished with a 36-hole total of 4-under 140. Shigezawa had five birdies and a bogey to shoot a final-round 68.

Chris Igawa finished third with 70—144.

XAVIER SWEEPS TITLES

Xavier University captured the men's and women's titles of the Hawai'i Pacific Invitational Saturday at Kualoa Ranch.

Tommy Kauffmann won the men's 8-kilometer race in 27 minutes, 56 seconds and Xavier took the top three places en route to a low-best score of 23 points. HPU scored 60 points to finish second with Dany Malley placing fourth in 28:24.

Former University of Hawai'i standout Chantelle Wilder, running unattached, won the women's 5K race in 19:04. She was followed by Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Amanda Whitford (19:11), Punahou School alum Eri McDonald (unattached, 19:33) and Xavier's Christina Schneider (19:37). Xavier scored 34 points. BYUH finished second with 58.


VOLLEYBALL

CANADIANS PLAY HERE

The East O'ahu Boys Volleyball Club will host two tournaments against teams from Canada.

The tournaments will be held today and Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Star of the Sea gym.

Both teams are composed of high school students. The teams from British Columbia and Alberta are ranked in top 10 among more than 150 teams in Canada.
