LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A 22-year-old Wailua man faces a possible second-degree murder charge in the shooting death of a 43-year-old man Sunday at the victim's East Kaua'i home.

Payton Allen Rapozo was arrested by police following a 2:50 p.m. shooting Sunday in the garage of the victim's Kawaihau Road home in Kapahi.

The victim is the boyfriend of Rapozo's mother. His name has not been released pending notification of relatives, Kaua'i Police Chief Darryl Perry said.

Family members held Rapozo for police after the shooting, which followed an argument between the two men, Perry said.

Police recovered a gun believed to have been used in the shooting, a .22-caliber revolver pistol, Perry said.

Rapozo was arrested Jan. 7, 2007, after allegedly throwing gasoline on a police officer and attempting to light it, according to Kaua'i police records.

Police were responding to a domestic dispute at Kapa'a Family Housing Project when that incident occurred.

The Garden Island newspaper reported in July 2007 that Rapozo originally was charged with attempted murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of first-degree attempted assault and terroristic threatening, for which he received five months in jail and five years' probation.
