Advertiser Staff

Existing heart problems contributed to the death of a 57-year-old Iowa man who died while preparing to scuba dive near Kaka'ako Waterfront Park last week, according to the city medical examiner's office.

The cause of death for William Cooey of Dubuque, Iowa, was listed as near drowning with other contributing causes being ischemic heart disease, diabetes and hypertension, the office said yesterday.

Ischemic heart disease is low blood supply to the heart due to obstruction.

Cooey died Thursday at Straub Hospital.

He and his wife, Barb, were visiting his son, Ryan, who is stationed at the Kane'ohe Marine Corps Base, a report in the Cedar Rapids Gazette said.

The Iowa newspaper reported that Cooey had five children, taught at Maquoketa High School and was a Boy Scout leader for nearly 30 years.

LATE GUARD SOLDIER WAS FROM SAIPAN

The Hawai'i National Guard soldier who died during training last week in Texas was a police officer from the island of Saipan in the Northern Marianas.

Sgt. Julian Manglona, 39, who was assigned to the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, collapsed after a six-mile run Thursday in the North Fort Hood training area, according to the Army Reserve 9th Mission Support Command headquarters in Honolulu.

He and his unit were training for what would have been his second deployment to Iraq and Kuwait as a member of the Army Reserve.

Brig. Gen. Alexander I. Kozlov, commanding general of the 9th Mission Support Command, said he and Maj. Gen. Robert G.F. Lee, adjutant general of the Hawai'i National Guard, sent their heartfelt condolences to Manglona's family.

"Losing a family member ... is very difficult. When soldiers train and deploy together, they, too, become like family," Kozlov said. "Any time we lose a soldier, we grieve. We are grieving right now. Our thoughts and prayers are with Julian's family and our soldiers during this difficult time."
