While the rest of public school students enjoyed the fall intersession last week, Leilehua senior Edieson Dumlao put in some extra time working his craft.

Dumlao, a receiver on the school's defending Division I state championship football team, used the break to hone his pass-catching skills and improve his timing with quarterback Andrew Manley.

Apparently, it paid off.

In the Mules' 27-21 road win at Waipahu Saturday, Dumlao caught 13 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns.

"We worked throughout the week after practice, just on our routes and timing," Manley said. "He's got a lot of talent and I just have to get him the ball."

After Waipahu took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter, Manley and Dumlao took over. They connected on the next three scores — touchdown passes of 21, 15 and 38 yards to put the Mules ahead, 20-7.

"We came out a little flat, but the offense picked it up and Andrew and Edieson were a big part of that," Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda said.

Ten of Dumlao's receptions resulted in first downs and four came on third-down situations. Showing his clutch ability, Dumlao's third touchdown catch came on fourth-and-11.

"Our guys were able to make big plays during key times," Tokuda said.

For the season, Dumlao has 46 receptions for 642 yards and seven touchdowns.

Leilehua won the Red West and has a bye in this week's first round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Division Tournament. The Mules will host the winner of Friday's Kaimuki-Waipahu game.
