Coast Guard rescues sailor who departed from Hawaii

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A sailor stranded at sea on a solo cruise from Hawaii to the mainland has been rescued by the Coast Guard some 100 miles off Southern California.

Coast Guard spokesman Anthony Turner says the 44-foot ketch Sisuito had torn sails and had run out of fuel. The name of the sailor is being withheld.

The Coast Guard cutter Halibut out of Marina del Rey was dispatched early Tuesday to the location 100 miles offshore and the vessel was towed toward Los Angeles.

A 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Channel Islands then took over and towed the vessel to the Oxnard harbor.
