PAHOA
Driver found dead in truck in roadside brush

Big Island police say a fatal traffic accident victim went undiscovered in his pickup truck for two days before the wreckage was found in heavy brush along Hawaii Belt Road.

The 35-year-old was identified as Jerome K.K. Kalani Sr. of Pahoa.

State highway workers came across the truck with Kalani's body pinned inside Monday afternoon. Kalani was wearing a seatbelt.

Police believe the accident happened early Saturday morning.

They say the truck apparently went out of control, ran off the right side of the road, struck a "no parking" sign and swerved to the left into the median, striking a tree and dropping about 10 to 15 feet below the highway.

Police believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
