Point Loma Nazarene golfer Sam Cyr, a 2004 graduate of King Kekaulike, joined some elite company last week, becoming just the eighth collegiate golfer to ever shoot a round of 60.

Cyr's 12-under-par opening round at the Grand Canyon Fall Classic at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz., propelled him to a wire-to-wire victory. He followed with 70 and 71 to finish at 15-under-par 201, six strokes better than the second-place finisher.

Point Loma Nazarene, in San Diego, competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and is a member of the Golden State Athletic Conference. Cyr, a senior majoring in business administration, is believed to be the first golfer to shoot 60 in an NAIA event.

Cyr, who started the round even par through two holes, hit all fairways and missed just one green — the 18th. If not for two birdie putts (holes 12 and 17) that lipped out, Cyr might have shot 58.

As a junior, Cyr won the NAIA national championship with an eight-under-par 280 at the Indiana National Golf Club in Plymouth, Ind., last spring.

Cyr, whose previous best round at Point Loma Nazarene was a 66, is currently ranked first in the NAIA par-3 scoring (2.83 strokes per hole) and subpar strokes per round (6.67). He is second in par-4 (3.83) and tied for third in par-5 (4.33) scoring.
